Bad news: No high def for Sunday Packers game

.
La Crosse-area Packers fans lucky enough to have high-definition televisions will have to settle for a regular old picture when their team plays in the NFC championship Sunday.

That’s because the game is on Fox and local affiliate WLAX isn’t able to transmit high-definition signals yet.

The good news for viewers: The station is “very, very close” to finishing the switch, said program director Barb Quillin.

Quillin said they are waiting for some equipment to be delivered and hope to start installing it next week. They are optimistic Channel 25 could be broadcasting an HD signal in La Crosse in time for the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, which also is on Fox.

Of course, that’s only if everything arrives on time and the weather cooperates, said station manager Bob Weinstein. “It’s not as simple as plugging your TV in.”

The reason for the delay is money, Quillin said. “You do things as you can afford to do them.”

For the past five years, since other area stations started broadcasting in HD, viewers have been asking when they could get the sharper picture — especially during football season, Weinstein said.

“We want it, too,” he said. “It’s not like I don’t want to watch it.”

Digital conversion

In an effort to free up airwaves for other uses, Congress voted in 1996 to make full-power TV broadcasters switch to a digital format. The Federal Communications Commission required all small market TV stations to broadcast in digital by May 2002, but three quarters missed the deadline nationwide.

Area stations now broadcasting digitally, though they continue to send their programs over analog frequencies as well.

But come Feb. 17, 2009, they will have to quit broadcasting analog signals.

By then, most viewers won’t even notice. New TVs made since March 1 must have digital tuners, and area retailers say they long since have sold their last analog sets.

Cable subscribers don’t need to worry, since the cable companies take care of converting the signals.

But those people who still get their TV programs through antennae will have to buy a converter if they don’t have a new digital set. That’s more than 500,000 homes in Wisconsin, or nearly a quarter of households, according to Nielsen figures provided by the National Association of Broadcasters. About 11 percent of viewers in the La Crosse area get their reception over the air, well below the 23 percent statewide.

Those people, as well as those in nearly 15 million American homes where secondary sets are not hooked up to cable or satellite service, will need to buy converters, which are available locally for about $160, though the cost is expected to drop to less than $75 in the coming year. The Federal Communications Commission is offering each household two $40 vouchers to offset the price.

Bigger, sharper pictures

Though the conversion is costly for TV stations — roughly $2 million, including the cost of broadcasting parallel analog signals — digital broadcasting offers benefits, too.

Digital signals are clearer, and broadcasters can offer high-definition programming and double their offerings by splitting their digital channel.

Though broadcasters aren’t required to transmit high-definition signals, most area stations say they pass along whatever high-definition content they get from the networks because the cost isn’t significantly more and viewers expect it.

“With CBS football, if we don’t switch the high-def on right away, we get a lot of phone calls,” said Dennis McSorley, chief engineer at WKBT, which has been broadcasting digital and HD signals since 2003.

Football isn’t the only thing that’s better in high definition, but fans do appreciate the sharper images — up to four times the resolution of an analog broadcast — and the wider format, which allow them to see more of the action.

Besides Christmas, retailers say January is one of their best periods for TV sales. Dan Riemer, a home theater specialist at Best Buy, said now is a big time for HDTVs, which sell for $300 to $6,500.

“We do still see business after holidays,” said Brian Rooker, TV department manager at Wettstein’s. “How well the Packers — or Vikings — do affects that.”

" In a posting elsewhere only a few days ago, the Chief Engineer at WLAX states that they DON'T have the parts, and doesn't know when thy will have them. Then he mentioned NASCAR as a possibility for HD, and concluded that since the Packers didn't win, it's no longer a BIG DEAL "

" Because we are so close to the satellite spot beams one can receive out of market locals. You must have a service address inside that market. You can do a google search to find out more. Its not recommended but it is done. "

" it's so funny to ME how some people are willing to waste all their money just to have the newest and best. the schmucks waste big bucks to get the technology first. big deal. meanwhile those who have the patience to wait until all the schmucks have made the technology affordable to the rest of us get in on the action...think CD players, DVDs, camera phones, bluetooth, playstation, it just keeps coming...soon HD flatscreens for all, $200 at walmart with FREE HD programming...ha! darwin is onto something. "

" Darwin, better yet: get a grown up job so you can afford all of the above. Do you deliver pizzas for a living or something that you cannot afford it? The tv is as good as any tv with a SD broadcast, however, those of us with some disposable income have come to realize SD is terrible after watching HD. So, no you don't need to stop wasting your money on essentials; you simply need a better job! "

" Get real, bkpierce!
What if the government told you that you had to replace every single electrical appliance in your house by a certain date? Effectively that is what the government has done to tv stations.
Every piece of equipment from cameras and tape decks to routing and switching to distribution and transmission has to be replaced with HD compliant equipment. The cost is enormous and the engineering challenges are not easily solved.
So, while it is a drag that the Pack will be in old-fashioned low-def TV, I'm sure that the folks at WLAX will meet the government-imposed deadline. "

bkpierce wrote on Jan 18, 2008 2:30 PM:

" I also encourage everyone to call the local Fox station and voice your opinion. Their phone number is 781-0025. "

bkpierce wrote on Jan 18, 2008 2:27 PM:

" I can't believe its taken Fox this long to get HD, ridiculous. What's even better is I have Direct TV and they will let you pick up the East and West coast feeds that are in HD but only IF the local station says it's OK. Fox has denied their request several times. The picture and sound are so much better in HD, I'm so glad that I invested money in the TV and am unable to watch major sporting events in HD. "

" Pickles. I have Centurytel DTV and my HDTV is not High definition with Centurytel. When I say cable, Im refering to a generalization that cable brings cable stations to my home. It does not however offer High def.yet. Hence, no HD on my HDTV. I got the facts straight. Fact, you desire sex slave children from Cambodia. You sick MF. "

Darwin wrote on Jan 18, 2008 12:43 PM:

" Darwin does watch some TV - but I make sure the content is compelling enough that the quality of the image is not the most important factor. Guess I need to stop wasting my money silly things like books, groceries and healthcare and instead invest in a tv that isn't good unless HD is being broadcast. What on earth was I thinking? "

chief5151 wrote on Jan 18, 2008 12:04 PM:

" Darwin either does not watch television or has never seen an HD feed because the differnce between SD and HD is striking. Standard def is unwatchable after enjoying the clear picture of HD. The difference between SD and HD is at least as large as the difference between color and B&W. After viewing HD, it feels like there is something wrong with my eyes watching SD. It is inexcusable FOX25 has not made the conversion yet. "

" The ad in today's paper for the Rivoli says they'll be showing the Packers/Giants game in Hi-Def. Does Dish provide them with a Hi-Def feed for NFL games that doesn't get blacked out by the local broadcast? Or do they have a different Fox channel that replaces Fox 25/48? As a DirecTV subscriber, I doubt Channel 25 will have the Hi-Def broadcasts up and running in time for me to get the Hi-Def feed without a powered antenna, but at least it looks like I'll be ready for the next season. "

" That's funny. I emailed Fox this weekend and asked if they would have their HD signal ready for the Superbowl and somebody responded that they were working as fast as they could and hope to have it up and running by mid-2008.

So I would bet that the parts won't arrive on time and the weather will not cooperate and it will be right around January 2009 when we finally get an HD signal from the local Fox station "
