Now Jensen and Steinbrinck are seeing that pledge in action.
Jensen was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer after Christmas and had to leave campus for treatment this semester. So Delta Sigma Pi decided to step in to help pay her apartment rent while she’s gone and collect money for medical costs.
“It proved to me that we can be the brotherhood that we say we are,” said Steinbrinck. “... I know Kate is grateful, and I’m grateful for the help they are willing to give to someone they don’t even know that well yet.”
Fraternity president Kevin Delray wrote an e-mail asking the 81 members of Delta Sigma Pi to donate $3 a month until the end of the semester to raise about $740 for three months of apartment rent. They’ll also sell royal blue bracelets printed with “Thinking of Kate” for $5 each. Any extra funds collected past rent will help pay medical expenses.
Delray said it was natural to reach out to Jensen, because “it is part of our brotherhood to always be looking out for each other. Fortunately, we have the numbers and are able to spread the cost evenly throughout.”
Steinbrinck and Jensen have been friends since high school.
“It (cancer) rarely happens to someone you are so close to and who is so young,” said Steinbrinck. “It takes you by total surprise.”
The fraternity will order bracelets in the next two weeks. To buy one, contact Steinbrinck by e-mail at steinbri.erin@students.uwlax.edu
