Global warming task force hears divergent views

.
Some Wisconsin residents called for more use of renewable energy sources such as wind, water and biofuels as Gov. Jim Doyle’s Task Force on Global Warming held a public input session by videoconference Wednesday in La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay.

But the task force, which delivered its interim report to Doyle in February, also heard a few people claim manmade global warming is a hoax.
And some objected to the interim report’s recommendation the state Public Service Commission be required to create uniform standards for siting wind turbines. The interim report suggested the change because local governments have varied on how they enforce existing law on siting small wind systems.

Speaking at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse site, Betty Wolcott of Osseo, Wis., praised the wind ordinance recently adopted by the Trempealeau County Board. AgWind Energy Partners, which earlier approached the county about building a wind farm, claims the county ordinance is too restrictive and contradicts the state’s model.

A wind farm bill that died last week in the Wisconsin Legislature was “a slap in the face” because it would have taken away local input in siting decisions, Wolcott said.

A key issue is how far wind farms should have to be set back from surrounding homes to protect property owners from unreasonable noise.

Climate change is a reality and may be happening faster than originally forecast, Lillian Nordin of rural Holmen, Wis., said at the UW-L site. She favors a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants while working to reduce emissions from the current ones.

Natural gas-fired plants that produce electricity should be used to their full potential, to reduce reliance on coal-fired plants, said Thomas Wilson of La Crosse.

About 30 people showed up at the the UW-L site.

The task force is comprised of environmental, industry and utility leaders, as well as representatives from the state Department of Natural Resources and the Public Service Commission. Its mission is to examine the effects of and solutions to global warming in Wisconsin.

Some recommendations in its interim report include utility ratemaking policies that promote energy conservation and efficiency, exploring the idea of erecting wind turbines on the Great Lakes and studying the possibility of pumping carbon dioxide from power plants into the ground or sending the gas by pipeline to other states.

" To all the bloggers that think warming is real, do you have an alternative. Reread the article. We know what happened to the wind farm plan in Tremp. Co. Great idea but not in my back yard?? Ms Nordin wants to cut coal fired plants but with what alternative Nucs??
AlGore is currently according to the guy who created the weather channel, and has credentials out his wazoo, gonna be sued to prove his "inconvient truth". It's for fraud for selling "carbon credits" Stay tuned hommy "

" Doyle wants to be famous, he is reinventing the wheel. He is a micro manager and thinks he is going to make himself famous at Wisconsin's expense. We need to eliminate these bureaucracies. Doyle is the worst Governor in Wisconsin history! "

" On my desk here in Madison I have six separate, peer-reviewed papers published in Science and other journals during the past decade. Every one confirms that changes in atmospheric CO2 LAG BEHIND changes in temperature by a few hundred to a few thousand years. Doesn't matter if movement is up or down; temperatures move first. Understanding how CO2 can cause something that happened 800 years earlier is beyond my humble capacities. If anyone from the Trib would like to see these for themselves, you should be able to find me and I'll happily share the titles. "

" dean, just to clarify things for you. we don't have 'numbered' hurricanes, we give them 'names'. and one of the reasons we seem to have more 'named' storms, is that a few years ago, for some reason, they started 'naming' tropical storms. maybe thunderstorms should be named too? if you really want to find out the 'truth' about supposed global warming, the worst place to get accurate information is definately from the 'news' media. "

" umm oz, you might want to educate yourself about Greenland. they have this thing called google, and i might suggest typing in 'greenland climate history'. the great thing about google is it doesn't have an 'agenda' like the media does. and i've always beeen curious how so may seem to take the word of a failed politician aka Reverend Al as 'gospel', yet try to silence those they beleive to be 'nonbelievers'. sounds very religious to me. " Dont be stupid ,Evidence of Global warming will not show up on your thermometers it will be not normal weather patterns .Most every state will lose their state flower as an example but we are a ways from that.We need to get off the oil ,N Dakota has more wind energy than arabs and oil, One county in Nevada / Solar energy etc "

Do you have a masters in paleoclimentology or something simallar? I thought not! "

" ryeguy,

If you really care to educate yourself further there are plenty of experts who disagree with the unfounded global warming scam. The director of NOAA is one of them. The links below is a good start. Also, keep in mind the U.S. media picks and chooses what they share with the masses so I find the BBC as well as CBC provide the most unbiased reporting.

I personally fell that for humans to think they are capable of destroying this great planet is very arrogant and self righteous.

" Documented facts are that their are so many varibles to climate change and we do not at this time understand enough of these variables to reach any kind of reliable conclutions. It was recently published by the scientfic community that if we take all the (what we believe are) the know variables and entered them into the fasted computer system available, it would still take years of computing to arrive an any kind of answer. That answer would even then be only as accurate as the current knowledge of the computer programers and the true accuracy of the input data. "

Senior Advocate wrote on Mar 20, 2008 9:44 AM:

" More and more scientists are beginning to separate themselves from the alarmists with faulty data. We may or may not be in a period of global warming but many are begining to realize the the man-made portion of it is more hype than reality. The world's financial organizations have allready instituted a stock market type system for buying and selling carbon credits etc. YOu do not need to be an expert all you need to do is follow the money trail.
"

oz wrote on Mar 20, 2008 9:16 AM:

" Did I ever say that? Quit putting words into my mouth. The proof is in the long-term trends that can be derived from glacial ice layers, ocean sediment, and several other natural records. And Greenland was never "green", at least not in recorded history. It was given that name to confuse other countries' explorers away from a lush green land of thermal hot springs called "Iceland". "

" yep bb they got you hook line and sinker. is it global warming or global cooling, you can't have it both ways. i just heard yesterday the high amount of snow and the heavy storms to the south were a result of a la nina weather pattern, i guess global warming must cause that. did global warming cause the heavy snows in 1979 too? wake up people. the weather and climate on earth are VERY dynamic and constantly changing, not only that, the sun has effects on us that we don't yet understand. all i'm saying is keep an open mind and don't just jump cause al gore "climate expert" says so. "

bb wrote on Mar 20, 2008 7:14 AM:

" vince,

You do realize that the excessive snow and ice here is a direct cause of global warming, (aka Climate Change).

It also explains all the other horrible weather everywhere, the temperatures won't change much, but the displacement of the water is the major problem.

But even a couple of a degree change will affect climate everywhere.

"

vince wrote on Mar 20, 2008 6:56 AM:

" kind of a tough sell during one of the snowiest, and coldest winters on record. easter temperatures 14 degrees below normal. keep listening to al gore and all the "experts" who are looking for another way to tax us. they better hurry and start their carbon tax in motion before the earths temperatures start to get cooler again. the temperature of the earth has been fluctuating since the beginning of time. greenland used to be just that, green and very pleasant, now it's ice. "

ryeguy wrote on Mar 20, 2008 6:48 AM:

" So "some people" claimed global climate change is a hoax, huh? No surprise, but exactly who were they and do they have ANY expertise or are they just popping off with an opinion? The fact is that any scientist who studies this and who is not on a lobbyist payroll knows that it is real, it is serious, and is more of a national security threat than any muslim jihadist. Once the arctic ice is completely gone (it is the thinnest in recorded history this year), earth's albedo will change and all bets are off. Climate change will cause crop failures, massive migration, and wars for water and good soil. Glaciers account for 40% of drinking water globally and they are saying bye-bye even as we drink our morning coffee. "
