The funds will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which gives grants to research cures, causes and less-toxic treatments for children with cancer. The fundraiser grew from a single lemonade stand set up
in July 2000 by Alex Scott, a 4-year-old who had
cancer and wanted to raise money so other children didn’t have to endure what she did. Scott died in 2004, but her tradition lived on and eventually created the foundation.
This will be the third year Alpha Xi Delta has opened stands locally. Last year’s efforts raised about $1,000, said Carrie Collister, president of the UW-L chapter of the sorority. The sorority chose the fundraiser
after a member heard about it on “Oprah,” she said.
“We are doing it in memory of that little girl and to give back to her vision of doing something to help, as easy as holding a lemonade stand,” said Collister.
Lemonade stands will be open from 11 a.m. to
4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Quillin’s IGA, 2500 State Road, near Central High School; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at the UW-L clock tower. A glass of lemonade costs as much as you want to donate.
Individuals also can mail a donation to Alpha Xi Delta, 1725 State St., 212 Cartwright Center, Box 126, La Crosse, WI 54601 or e-mail colliste.carr@students.

Get a car wash, support a cure
Speaking of fundrais-ers for a cure, a UW-L communications class will host a car wash
from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Rudy’s Drive-In, 1004 La Crosse St., to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Folks can show their support by donating a minimum $3. If a clean vehicle isn’t enough, donors also receive a voucher for a free root beer float from Rudy’s.
“Juvenile diabetes is becoming more common,” said UW-L junior Kevin Callaghan. “We wanted to pick something that is touching the lives of people, something that they care about and want to contribute to.”
