College roundup: Viterbo falls short to Waldorf in DH

The Viterbo University softball team came close to earning a win, or even a sweep, over MCC-leading Waldorf on Saturday, but the Vikings instead won a pair of eight-inning games, 6-4 and 3-2, at the Viterbo Athletic Complex.

Waldorf pitcher Chelsea Dougherty struck out 12 batters in the first game while allowing her only runs on solo homers by Jen Pintz and Betsy Ward.

The Vikings (29-10, 19-3) scored in the top of the eighth on Laura Read’s RBI single that followed a hit by pitch, error and sacrifice bunt.

In the second game, the V-Hawks (7-25, 3-15) rallied to tie the game after falling behind 4-0, but Waldorf scored two runs in the eighth on a Read homer. Kacey Moline had three hits for the V-Hawks.

Dougherty also won the second game, pitching two perfect innings of relief.
