Take steps to limit exposure to spring allergens

.
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, are you ready for the upcoming season? The arrival of spring will bring blooming trees and grass, which may lead to sneezing and wheezing for more than 20 percent of the population.

Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects an estimated 40 million Americans and causes symptoms of sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, runny nose and a burning or itchy sensation in the throat or palate. Spring allergies are mostly commonly caused by tree and grass pollen; however, another spring allergy trigger is mold, which releases spores into the air. Wet winters can provide an ideal breeding ground for mold.
Tips for limiting allergy exposure include:

  • Keep house windows closed at night to prevent pollens and molds from entering your home.

  • Minimize early morning activity, when pollen is at its peak.

  • Avoid hanging sheets or clothes out to dry, as pollens and molds may collect in them.

  • Wipe down indoor/outdoor pets before having them enter the home. Pollen can cling to the dog or cat.

  • Travel with the car windows closed; use air conditioning if needed.

  • Shower after spending time outdoors, or shower before going to bed.

  • Take off your shoes at the door and consider changing clothes after spending time outdoors.

Pollen counts from April through September are available by calling Allergy Associates of La Crosse at (608) 782-2027.
