5 things you didn’t know about ... facial rejuvenation

.
Dr. Alan Serure, a South Miami, Fla., plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has been in private practice since 1985. He offers a few tidbits on facial procedures:

Good results are those you don’t notice unless someone tells you. Those you notice are obviously overdone, whether they’ve been pulled too tight or given too much Botox. The goal should be to keep your essence, but to look natural, rested and rejuvenated.
Surgery provides long-lasting improvements in the battle against aging. Rhytidectomy, which is a face-lift, tightens the skin as well as muscles and removes unwanted fat from the face. It also can reposition fat that has fallen with gravity, lift the face and tighten the neck. Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, removes excess skin from upper eyelids and puffiness from lower lids. Brow-lifting can be done endoscopically with minimal incisions to raise the brows in a subtle fashion.

Noninvasive techniques play a tremendous role. Thermage, a nonsurgical skin-tightening procedure, provides modest results. Botox weakens muscles that can cause wrinkles. Restylane, Perlane or Juvederm work to fill wrinkles. These noninvasive techniques can be used with surgery because they work to complement each other.

With surgery, there will be scars, but they can be hidden in natural creases and hairlines. If you schedule facial surgery before a wedding or other big event, allow six to eight weeks to look your best.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it isn’t true!” Serure says. “Lunchtime lift, lunchtime lipo, thread lifts don’t get the job done.” You could ask your friends, but “your friends don’t always tell you everything they’ve had done.”

“If you’re considering plastic surgery, discuss all risks and your complete medical history with your physician,” he said.
