Gladys M. Connolly
Gladys M. Connolly, 77, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse with her children by her side.
She was born in Sheboygan, Wis., on July 10, 1930, to Carl and Jennie (Bayens) Rust. Gladys graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1948. She continued her education at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Ill., where she received her registered nursing degree on May 4, 1951. On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage with Bernard Connolly at St. Joseph’s Church in Springfield. Later that year, they returned to Sheboygan to make their home and start a family.
Gladys was employed as a registered nurse with St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan for 15 years. In 1967, they moved to Litchfield, Ill. She unselfishly left her nursing career behind to stay at home and raise her family. In 1975, Gladys and her family returned to her beloved Lake Michigan in Green Bay, Wis. In 1990, Gladys and Bernard moved to their cottage on Little Long Lake near Wabeno, Wis. In 1999, Gladys and Bernard moved to La Crosse to be closer to their family. Gladys had been a resident of Hillview Healthcare Center in La Crosse since 2006.
Gladys enjoyed entertaining her children and grandchildren. She took them fishing and swimming at the cottage and loved to share her homemade specialty pizzas that will never be forgotten. She also loved to knit, work outdoors in her garden and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Her love for the waters of Lake Michigan and Little Long Lake will be forever engrained into the hearts and souls of her children whenever they hear the sound of a shoreline wave or the call of a loon. She encouraged her children to participate in musical events and inspired them to keep music in their hearts. Gladys was a loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She had a big heart, a wonderful sense of humor and she always put her family first. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.
Gladys is survived by her three children, Paul (Mary T.) Connolly of Green Bay, Kathy (Mark) Pieterick and Mary Jo (Dean) Simon of La Crosse; daughter-in-law, Janice Connolly of Eau Claire, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Patrick Connolly of Eau Claire, Daniel and John Connolly of Green Bay, Eric and David Siddons and Emily Simon of La Crosse; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Tristin; two sisters, Carole Richter and Patricia Schubert; and one brother, Bill Williams, all of Sheboygan, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard Connolly, on Jan. 5, 2001; one son, Michael P. Connolly, on March 23, 2008; one sister; and one brother.
