Wayne R. Bollrud
Wayne R. Bollrud, 87, of La Crosse passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, after 3˝ years of wonderful care at the Onalaska Care Center.

He was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Minneapolis to George and Edna (Mundsack) Bollrud. Wayne served in the Marine Corps during WWII in the South Pacific. That is where he met his wonderful wife, Elizabeth, who was also serving in the Marine Corps. They married May 18, 1946, in Menominee, Mich., and would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this month.

His lifetime work was with La Crosse County Welfare and Social Services, and he was the first fraud investigator for Social Services.

Wayne was an avid fisherman and was a strong supporter of the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; two daughters, Jeanine (Marty) Juel of Goshen, Ind., and Bonnie (Bernard) Servais of Rochester, Minn.; and three grandchildren, Melissa, Shaun and Kelly Servais.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Si Knutson, and a stepbrother, Warren Knutson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 1022 Caledonia St., La Crosse. The Rev. Doris Simpson will officiate, and burial with military honors will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call the church today from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials may be given to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

WEST SALEM, Wis. — Rosella “Rose” M. Books, 57, of West Salem died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, La Crosse. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem.

Arlene ‘Rusty’ Ruth Conger

HOLMEN, Wis. — Arlene R. Conger, 76, of Holmen, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at her home after a long courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 8, 1931, to Rudolph and Olga (Reinert) Schumacher. She married Bernard Conger in Palo Alto, Calif., on Oct. 17, 1953, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 2006. Arlene was a member of the ladies sewing circle at Lewis Valley Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening and spending time in the outdoors.

She is survived by her two sons, Clyde (Mary) Conger of Holmen and Jeff (Cindy) Conger of Onalaska, Wis.; four grandchildren, Samuel, Sophie, Austin and Rachael; a sister, Elaine Vollbrecht of Sheboygan Falls, Wis.; and two brothers, Alfred Schumacher of Hartford, Wis., and Robert Schumacher of Oostburg, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; her parents; her son, Myron; and a brother, Clarence.

A private family memorial service will be held at Dickinson Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Janet Wollam will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial are preferred.

Dareld Hanson

VIROQUA, Wis. — Dareld Hanson, 82, of Viroqua passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Bethel Home in Viroqua.

He was born June 9, 1925, in Crawford County, Wis., to Andrew and Mary (Towers) Hanson. He married Loretta Chroninger on June 22, 1945. After their marriage, he drove a moving van, and they lived in various places. For a while he worked at Badger Ordnance Works in Baraboo, Wis. They later farmed, and he raised mink and bees. He owned and operated Hanson Honey Farm. He belonged to the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association and the Viroqua Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta of Viroqua; three sons, Marlin (Pat) of Bergland, Mich., Dennis (Jean) of Viroqua, and Duane (Carolyn) of Stoddard, Wis.; one daughter, Elaine (Dale) Haugrud of Viroqua; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-granchildren; and two brothers, Orie Hanson of Viroqua and Reuben (Emma) Hanson of Red Mound, Wis.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; eight sisters, Myrtle, Lena, Sena, Josie, Agnes, Eldora and two infant sisters; and three brothers, John, Andrew and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Readstown, Wis. Pastor Ron Doll will officiate. Burial will be in Viola (Wis.) Cemetery. Friends may call at Sime Funeral Home in Readstown on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., and on Sunday at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Hospital and the Vernon County Aging Unit. Condolences may be sent to simefuneralforum.com.

Clarence A. Hauge

VIROQUA/DE SOTO, Wis. — Clarence A. Hauge, 85, of Vernon Manor Nursing Home, Viroqua, and formerly of De Soto died Thursday, May 1, 2008.

Clarence was born Dec. 8, 1922, in the town of Franklin, Wis., to Alfred and Mabel (Olson) Hauge. He was a member of the Freeman Lutheran Church, rural Ferryville, Wis. Clarence worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad from August 1949 to June 1984. He lived in Ferryville most of his life, and following his marriage to Mabel Gee on July 5, 1968, they moved to De Soto.

Clarence is survived by a brother, Oscar Hauge at Vernon Manor in Viroqua; sisters: Marlene Swiggum of Viroqua; Mary (John) Sutton of Westby, Wis., and Janet Munson of Maplewood, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel; two sisters, Priscilla Moore and Pearl Beaston; and seven brothers, Kermit, Arthur, Thomas, Rueben, Chester, Alvin and Odean.

Clarence liked to visit and have coffee with people. He was a kind and gentle man.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at Freeman Lutheran Church, rural Ferryville. Pastor Libby Howe will officiate. Burial will be in Freeman Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St. (Hwy. 56), Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be offered at www.vosseteigfuneralhomes.com.

Luan I. Kowalsky

ARCADIA, Wis. — Luan I. Kowalsky, 90, of Horicon, Wis., and formerly of Arcadia died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Horicon Manor. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, followed by graveside services at Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery, Arcadia. Larry Lee McCumber

Larry McCumber, 63, of La Crosse passed away April 27, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, La Crosse.

He was born Dec. 28, 1944, in Richland Center, Wis., to Oliver and Mildred (Shell) McCumber. Larry married Linda Waller on Jan. 28, 1967.

Larry is survived by Linda; two children, Jason McCumber and Lona (Vance) VanKirk; three grandchildren, Emily, Renee and Peter VanKirk; three brothers, Neil (Nancy), Wayne and Richard McCumber; special lifelong friends, Douglas and Karen Miller, and their daughters Lori, Michelle and Jennifer; many special nieces and nephews; and extended family.

Larry served in the Army and was a machinist by trade, being self-employed for many years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, family and many friends. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and playing cards. He appreciated music and played guitar for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marlin and Darwin McCumber.

Graveside services will be held at Onalaska (Wis.) Cemetery on Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. Fran Browning, FSPA pastoral care coordinator, will officiate. Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Alice C. Oldendorf

BLAIR, Wis. — Alice C. Oldendorf, 98, of Blair died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Zion Lutheran Church, Blair. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jack Funeral Home, Blair, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.
