Rosella M. ‘Rose’ Books

WEST SALEM, Wis. — Rosella M. “Rose” Books, 57, of West Salem passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse, after a longtime battle with cancer.

She was born April 16, 1951, in Sparta, Wis., to Louis and Lillian (Johnson) Livangood. On Sept. 6, 2003, she married Donald Books, and he preceded her in death in 2004. Rose spent alot of time sitting in her backyard enjoying her pond and flowers that she grew and loved, especially when it was a nice sunny day. Her family was very special to her and she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include six children, Tracy (Richard Sr.) Dockerty of Cashton, Wis., Robin (Rosendo) Olvera of Sparta, Gretchen (Stacy) of Milwaukee, and Danielle Lambert, Ryan Flood, and Darsta Chitek, all of Sparta; 15 grandchildren, Amanda, Michael, John, Karanda, Richard Jr., Trent, Courtney, Bobbie Jo, Selena, Sasha, Bianca, Dominic, Santana, Leo and McKinzie; and grandson, Presten, on the way; three great-grandchildren, Chance, Carter and Tristan; her father, Louis Livangood of Sparta; five brothers and sisters, Bobby Livangood of Coon Valley, Wis., Rosalie Guderjohn of Waupaca, Wis., Jerry (Terry) Livangood of Tacoma, Wash., and Tommy (LaVonne) Livangood and Patty Livangood, both of Sparta; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband; she was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian.

In accordance with her wishes, Rose’s body will be cremated and there will be no services. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert L. Brown

READSTOWN/VIOLA, Wis. — Robert L. Brown, 81, of Readstown and formerly of Viola died Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Wisconsin Home for Veterans in King, Wis.

He was born July 31, 1926, to Guy and Leona Brown of Viola Wis. Bob graduated from Viola High School in 1944 while he served in World War II with a Navy Construction Battalion. He also served as a Seaman 1-E for 19 months in the Pacific Theatre with engagements in Okinawa. He was a cheese grader for many years at John Kirkpatrick Cheese Warehouse in Viola, and then as a welder at Nelson Muffler in Viroqua, Wis. Bob served as fire chief for the Viola Volunteer Fire Department from 1959 to 1962 and again from 1975 through 1978. On March 15, 1995, Bob celebrated 50 years as a charter member of the Viola American Legion Post 447. He was also active in several civic and environmental organizations.

He is survived by his sister, Linda (Ken) Baker of Niagara, Wis.; two nieces, Tina (Bill) Straitt of Kenosha, Wis., and Beth Ann Baker of Waukesha, Wis.; two nephews, Justin (Sara) Baker of Milwaukee, and Joshua (Alisha) Baker of Broadhead, Wis.; aunt, Margaret Eames, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Bill Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Vosseteig Funeral Home’s Henthorn Memorial Center in Viola. Pastor Laverne Larson will officiate. Burial, with military rites by Viola American Legion Post 447, will be in the Viola Cemetery. Norman John Schein

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Norman John Schein, 83, of Galesville died Friday, May 2, 2008. He was born April 7, 1925, in Oshkosh, Wis., to Norman C. and Gertrude I. (Erban) Schein. As a World War II veteran, he was honored by the French government in 2004 and was inducted into the National Order of the Legion of Honor for his service in France.

After the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving his bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. He began his teaching career at the high school level at a small school in Niagara, Wis. In 1961, he joined the faculty at UW La Crosse, where he enjoyed a 26-year career in the education department, teaching science methods courses. He was known for his creative and innovative teaching methods.

He was president of the Lake Marinuka Lake Rehabilitation program. He also served on the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau school board. Norm was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoor enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Schein; and eight children, Jennifer Schein, Jeffrey Schein of Galesville, Theodore Schein of Anchorage, Alaska, Constance Schein (D. Leroy Sua and their children, Sydney and Graeme) of Holmen, Wis., Timothy Schein of Galesville and his children Tanya and Christina, Laura Johnsrud (Norman, and their children Sara, Darcy and Raymond) of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., David Schein (Jane, and their children Rebakkah and Matthew) of Onalaska, Wis., and Michael Schein (Teresa, of Galesville and their children Jonathan (Mary, and their son Tristan) and Richard (Rhonda). He is further survived by three sisters and one brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Rosemary Kuborn Schein.

Funeral services will be Sunday, May 4, at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen. Visitation will be from 2 until 3 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. D. Leroy Sua officiating.
