Rock County allows inmates to work off sentences

.
JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — A new program in Rock County allows inmates to leave jail on weekends to work in order to pay off fines.

Sheriff Robert Spoden says instead of having an inmate sitting in a cell or watching TV at a cost of $64 a day, non-violent offenders can report for work assignments on weekends.
Sheriff's Lieutenant Russ Steeber says the Workender program allows inmates to hold a job, stay with their families and take care of basic needs, yet work off their sentence.

Officials say the county will start with a group of about 20 inmates next month, with hopes of expanding the program in the future.

The sheriff's department is currently looking for nonprofit groups that need workers.

" wow, you all complain about everthing, this is the government/county to make these fools pay off what they owe themselves instead of leaning on the tax payers. I'm sure there are guidelines. If they are working 12 hours days, and go home and sleep, all the $ goes to fines, they have to stay on good behavior to participate, etc. This is also a realistic way to start to educated/re-establish themselves as a normal working citizen. " Sounds like the perfect lifestyle. Sit around and watch tv all week in a cell witha bunch of other guys--then go home for the weekend to make a buck and greet the old lady. What a grand vacation, er, punishment. "

" Why can't they just be on shackles and pickup trash 7 days a week? "

" LaCrosse county used to have a similar program (albeit limited), until it closed the Huber center. Now we just give them all an ankle bracelet and let them go home. That'll learn 'em! "

" Not so fast. Most of these guys probably have hubor already. That means they go to work during the week and sleep in the jail. Now they get to go home to their families on the weekend? What kind of punishment is that? "
