Published - Sunday, May 11, 2008 Rain washes away another race night at Speedway WEST SALEM, Wis. — For the second time in four weeks, the checkered flag never made it to the flagstand at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. And the drivers never made it onto the track. And the crowd, well, it went home — again. As persistent showers moved into, and then blanketed the region on Saturday night, Fairgrounds Speedway manager Chuck Deery canceled the event around 6 p.m. With the season just four weeks old, two of the events have been canceled —the first because of cold weather, and now, rain. “We expect to lose a couple of events in the early part of the season, but we also expect some nice weather,” Deery said. “I know the pendulum swings both ways, and this will guarantee us nice weather for the rest of the summer. I hope.” The event could tentatively be made up as part of a double-feature event Saturday, June 7, Deery said, with approval from NASCAR. Even with the rain out, it’s a busy week at the Fairgrounds Speedway as the USAC Midgets are scheduled to run on Friday night, and the regular racing program set for next Saturday.
