Sparta farmers market finds home despite some protest

.
The Sparta farmers market will have a new location when it opens May 26, though not the home vendors first wanted.

After several moves in as many years, the itinerant market approached the city last month about a permanent home in Blyton Park.
The Park Board approved the location, pending notification of the neighbors. But after receiving a letter and petition from nearby residents who

didn’t want the market in their neighborhood, the board agreed this week to a nearby spot in Memorial Park at the corner of Montgomery Street and Rusk Avenue.

“It’ll work out just fine,” said vendor Carol Schauf. “We didn’t give it a thought that someone might object. But Memorial Park will be fine.“

The market has about half a dozen vendors, but Schauf would like to have more. That’s part of the reason the farmers sought out a permanent spot with good visibility.

“We have to really get established,” Schauf said. She thinks there will be plenty of traffic at Memorial Park.

The market will open its season from 9 to 11 a.m. Memorial Day.

Regular hours during the summer are 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.

" I think Memorial Park will be a great place for the Farmer's Market. There will be plenty of room, and lots of good parking. For me, it works out good because it's within walking distance. Good luck farmers - I can't wait! "

" Don't blame the entire city. I'm sure it was a majority vote. I think they are better off in Memorial Park anyway. "

" While I agree with the previous posters, I sure would be nice to hear the other side of the story, if there really is one...duh "

" Basically someone who now lives in their Grandpa's house objected oh by the way he's a lawyer so go figure. Memorial Park should be a good fit lots of room there. "

" Way to go, Sparta! I agree with the others - who would NOT want fresh fruits and veggies available near their homes? I just don't get the Sparta people - it's like they're living in some other dimension - the twilight zone. "

" Why would people object to a farmers market in their neighborhood? I want a farmers market in mine, heck I'll let them set up in my yard. Fresh produce for me without having to grow it or drive to get it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was because of where they assume most of the farmers were born. "

" Sparta, What a wonderful small town to live in, they disgree with just about everything someone wants to do to improve this town. For the neighbors near Blyton Park, What harm is it with a few farmers selling fruit and vegtables going to harm the park or your neighborhood? A few extra cars in the area????Why don't you all think of the people that are unable to have the luxary of having a garden and would like "FRESH" produce to purchase. Do you think these farmers are MAKING A LOT OF MONEY..DO you even know what it takes to produce a GARDEN???? Good luck to the few farmers that are going to have a place to sell..I for one enjoy getting some produce and I have a garden!!!! "
