Minn. DNR lifts speed limit on St. Croix River
ST. PAUL — The Department of Natural Resources has rescinded its speed limit on the St. Croix River because the water level has risen.
The department put in a slow, no-wake zone on April 30 in an attempt to minimize shoreline erosion.
The restriction is triggered when the St. Croix reaches 683 feet above sea level at Stillwater. Officials say the river is now at 682.4 feet.
The speed limit arrangement is authorized by state rules in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
However, DNR hydrologist Molly Shodeen says St. Croix boaters should still be cautious because of potential for erosion and the dangers of floating debris.
