Hundreds arrested in raid at Iowa meatpacking plant

.
POSTVILLE, Iowa — Federal immigration agents in northeastern Iowa have arrested at least 300 people in a raid on the world’s largest kosher meatpacking plant.

U.S. Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth says the raid on the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville is the largest operation of its kind in Iowa history and followed months of planning.
Authorities arrived at the plant, located in the southwestern corner of Allamakee County, about

10 a.m. and presented company officials with search warrants. Agents asked to speak with all the employees, and plant officials cooperated and shut down their operations.

The raid was aimed at seeking evidence of identity theft, stolen Social Security numbers and for people who are in the country illegally, said Tim Counts, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman.

Sister Mary McCauley, a Roman Catholic nun at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Postville, said

family members of plant workers came to the nearby church in tears.

“The people right now are hearing and seeing the helicopters,” McCauley said Monday morning. “They are just panic-stricken and very frightened and some of them are coming to the church as a safe haven.“

The church is about five blocks from the plant, she said.

She said rumors began swirling around the community on Friday about an upcoming raid, leaving many people worried.

She said Immigration officials arrived with buses, vans and two helicopters.

Many of the plant workers are Hispanic, mostly from Mexico and Guatemala, she said.

" A problem about this that is more or less going uncommented on is the birth rate of the mexicans already in this country. It is high, and according to a recent survey is already overshadowing illegal immigration as a cause of the rising mexican population here. Part of mexico's problem is overpopulation. It seems as though they are reproducing this problem here. "

Why else does the military push that selling point so hard? "

I've never understood that stance, if you're born here, you are a citizen, even if, your parents were here illegally.

If you don't have a drivers license, and someone rear ends your vehicle, you're not at fault, right? WRONG, the reads you were not to be on the road, so you are 100% at fault, should be the same for illegal baby makers.

But then, once we claim them as citizens, they're going to grow up repressed and gives us more repressed people to coax into the military.

Sad freakin cycle "

That only supports my argument, no?

It just irritates me that there are good Mexicans that wait in line and do it right, but the ones with criminal minds say, 'ah, screw it, lets go swimmin' .... just to give you an idea of what their mind set is. Not only that, maybe they got rejected trying to do it the 'right' way. (criminal/ mental health history) "

" The article doesn't say if they arrested the owners or managers of the plant who are obviously guilty of hiring illegal workers.
Apparently the crime is trying to support yourself and your family, rather than encouraging illegal immigration and illegal albor practices.
Throw the owners in the clink and the illegal hiring will quickly slow down. "

There are 12 million plus illegal foreign nationals on American soil today, and that doesn't count all of the "anchor babies," that is a foreign national OCCUPYING FORCE that is over SIX (6) TIMES GREATER THAN THE US MILITARY.

The government doesn't have the resources and the public doesn't have the will to do what is necessary to remove this OCCUPYING FORCE.

HonestAbe, I didn't know you were speaking for these immigrants in Iowa. You know them personally? They are all mentally ill criminals? Yes, let's evoke all the crime done by illegals, they are the only ones committing crimes in this country. No whites commit crimes. How about the ones that support our economy and just go about their business? Don't let the bad apples spoil your opinion on a whole race, it's not fair to the rest of that race. "

" The first thing an illegal alien needs to do is get some fake papers. That gives them the ability to seek ANY job they are qualified for, not just sweat shops and migrant farm work. That puts them in direct competition for jobs mostly unskilled labor, with Americans. It also dilutes the market and lowers the value of those jobs. I think about two-thirds of the people I went to high school with never furthered their education, so they are the ones who are really taking the hit from illegal immigration. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 13, 2008 11:08 AM:

" Josie is right about the documentation. The government can't crackdown on the employer if they did all the checks they were required to do. If the illegals get enough fake papers to pass the minimals checks that are currently required for employment, there is nothing the employer can do. I don't think the added requirements for employment checking that came along from 911, have ever been implemented yet "

HonestAbe wrote on May 13, 2008 10:59 AM:

" Jaxx, the reason the companies have trouble finding people to fill the positions, is because they got spoiled paying minimum wages to illegals and won't offer more, so they keep hiring illegals. If all the illegals left, they would be forced to pay better and offer benefits, which, is the only way you're going to keep a good workforce in place anyway.

The illegals keep wages down for the exact reason I state above. Whoever is running these businesses should reconsider their workforce and their practices. "

Josie wrote on May 13, 2008 10:51 AM:

" Why all the disdain for illegal immigrants? What would you do if you were in their situation? Oh wait, you've never actually looked at it from their persepective. These people are just trying to support themselves/a family like the rest of us. The problem lies with the businesses only caring about making a profit and not their employees at all. So let's demand higher wages, even if, God forbid, it cuts into their profits.

Maybe if the process to gain citizenship was streamlined, and people could become citizens in a timely fashion, people wouldn't have to sneak into this country. Wouldn't the benefits of becoming a legal American citizen with a short wait be greater than those of entering the country illegally just to do so in a shorter amount of time. "

Also human traficking is a major role player in these raids for many of these illegals owe a fortune to their "Sponsors" who got them here! You people have no idea whats really happening out there 3rd world slavery is bigger today then before the civil war.Now we have corporate America back in the game too! Good Job INS! "

I'm not saying that the people belong being left alone, if they entered the country illegally then they need to leave and try again the proper way. Agriprocessors will be lucky if they are able to stay up and running with such a big loss in employees. "
