Investigators reconstructing scene of crash that killed two and injured five

.
Details surrounding a head-on crash that killed an elderly Arcadia, Wis., couple and injured five others Saturday evening were still murky Monday.

Evelyn Kokott, 84, died at the scene of the crash near the intersection of Wisconsin State Highway 93 and Lewis Valley Road just a few miles north of Arcadia. Her husband, Alphonse Kokott, 91, died Sunday from injuries he sustained in the collision. The two were returning home from a supper club in Independence, Wis., when the crash happened at about 7 p.m. Saturday, the Kokotts’ nephew Joseph Kokott said.
According to the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol, Evelyn Kokott was driving southbound on Highway 93 when her vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle being driven north by Timothy Geissler, 24, of Cornell, Wis. Geissler was in critical condition following the crash, said Trempealeau County Sheriff Rich Anderson.

Kokott’s other passengers, daughter Sharon Jackson, 63, and son-in-law, Ted Jackson, 68, both of Kenosha, Wis., suffered serious injuries. Ted Jackson suffered a punctured lung and Sharon Jackson had multiple broken bones, Joseph Kokott said.

A third vehicle southbound behind the Kokott vehicle got involved as Kokott and Geissler collided, Anderson said. It wasn’t exactly a rear-ending so much as the third vehicle drove into the “repositioning” vehicles, he said. The driver of that vehicle, Dylan Lisowski, 17, and his passenger, Nicholas C. Axness, 18, both of Arcadia, suffered minor injuries, Anderson said.

The exact cause of the collision was unknown Monday and remains under investigation, Anderson said. He said a reconstruction team will be working on the case today and the results of the investigation may not be known for a “couple days.”

" Do not blame the elderly driver. She was in her lane of traffic. Driving slower than the TEEN behind her wanted to travel. STory has it that the TEEN pulled out to pass in the BLIND corner causing the North bound car to swerve ans strike hte Kokotts, the Teen then hit the two cars. TEEN not ELDERLY caused this accident. Sympathy goes out to the family who lost both parents at one time. "

" First off, this is a sad story. I agree that older people should either be off the road or must pass more extensive driving tests. I was rearended once by an elderly women who said she didn't see me....as I was stopped at a red light. On another note, it sounds as if the other vehicle was in the wrong lane. The article says another southbound vehicle got involved but wasn't really a rear ending. Either way...this is unfortunate for everyone. My prayers are with the families involved. "

" Im Still Jackson: Please show me exactly WHERE, in the above mentioned article, that it states Mrs. Kokott was on the wrong side of the road. Also, please show me where it states that Mrs. Kokott was at fault. Last time I checked, the accident was still under investigation--unless, of course, you have some sort of "insider" information that the rest of us are not privy to? "

" Jackson,
Read the article again. She was 84 not 93. The accident took place on highway 93. We don't know what happened yet. It could have been the other drivers fault.
I do agree that older drivers should be monitored better. Maybe drivers over 80 should have to retake the road test every other year and have a doctor sign off on their health to keep their license. "

" A horrible tradgedy that could had been prevented. 93 and driving? She hit the other vehicle head on says she was on the wrong side of the road? Why wasnt the daughter driving?
Its all great they were independent and able to get out ect instead of sharing dinner trays at some nursing home BUT there are people who have their whole life ahead of them that just suffered LIFE CHANGING EVENTS because of the freedom the elderly couple enjoyed. Its not just drunks that kill, its elderly medicated drivers too, not saying she was on meds but most that age are and cause accidents. I dont think anyone that age should be driving and its time the law makers did something about it! "
