We Say: Todd Sommerfeldt, Tribune sportswriter, on WIAA spring baseball

I remember having a conversation with Aquinas football coach Dan Coughlin during the winter months of the 2006-07 school year.

I told him that I was planning on covering three Coulee region baseball teams at the WIAA state tournament in a few months. My predictions don’t always come true, but this one did as Logan qualified in Division 1, Aquinas in Division 3 and De Soto in Division 4. The Blugolds even came home with a state title.

Based on what I’ve seen this spring, there’s no reason to think I’ll be any less busy this June.

Logan’s talent, experience and depth — especially in its pitching — will make it a tough team to beat. Aquinas, which has lost only to Logan and

La Crescent, has shown that it will be a handful for any Division 3 team. Expect De Soto and Seneca to meet in a big Division 4 regional game, too, with that winner having a great chance to advance.

Coulee Region baseball seems to be a power again on all levels, and that’s a good thing for everyone.
