Ron Kind rips farm bill; Tim Walz pleased

.
U.S. Rep. Ron Kind went down swinging Wednesday in his fight against a compromise farm bill that passed the House.

“This bill was well designed to avoid every opportunity for serious reform of wasteful, outdated subsidy programs while actually piling on additional layers of unnecessary spending,” said Kind, D-La Crosse, at a news conference in Washington before the 318-106 vote.
“Commodity prices are through the roof and yet we are still funneling billions of dollars to farm households making up to $2.5 million a year in profit. I challenge any member of Congress to justify these outrageous payments to their constituents who are right now struggling with the highest food and fuel costs ever,” Kind said.

Kind’s opponents in November concur with his opposition to the compromise Farm Bill.

Asked about his position on the Farm Bill, Republican Paul Stark of Eau Claire, Wis., said as a proponent of the Fair Tax, “I don’t feel the federal government should be involved in subsidizing any one sector or individual.”

Libertarian Kevin Barrett of Lone Rock, Wis., said last week he supports Kind’s agricultural policy, though it “could be improved by an effort to bring back hemp for Wisconsin farmers.”

U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., voted for the bill and issued a statement saying he’s “especially pleased that the Farm Bill includes several key provisions I authored. This bill will provide more flexibility for Minnesota’s farmers, who will be able to plant more fruits and vegetables, instead of being locked into planting what the government requires.”

Walz added, “This Farm Bill includes a section I added which will make it easier for southeastern Minnesota’s organic producers to participate in the Farm Bill’s conservation programs.”

" To marley: Do you honestly think that the Democratic Congress in a year and a half can fix all of the Bush administrations problems that took over seven year's to create? Don't forget it was a Republican Congress for most of the Clinton year's too. If the top earners in this country can't afford to pay more taxes, than who can? Yes, President Obama is going to have a lot of problems to clean up all right... "

" If you read the farm bill closely you will see that it covers alot more than farm. I think it does accually read farm and food bill. It does have a price tag of $290 bil, of which $40 bil is designated agriculture. $30 bil of that goes towrds conservation programs that groups like trout unlimited and whitetales unlimited and so on have lobbied for. Of the $40 bil...roughly $10 bil actually goes towards true agricultural payments. On a percentage farmers actually get a little less than 4% of the monies set aside in this bill. The majority of the dollars are used for such programs as WIC. "

" marley, no matter how you spin it, today's Republicans have changed, they are whole new breed of cat unlike anything we have ever seen before. "

" Mack,

The democrats took control a year and a half ago and I don't see them doing any better. Some problems are not as simple to fix as having a different party in control. People need to quit blaming their elected officials for every problem and start looking in the mirror to find the problem. "

" Atta boy Kind! Now let's see what you can do about that ridiculous "Rereational Land Tax"...how about it buddy? "

Mack wrote on May 15, 2008 10:53 AM:

" marley, it's not just the rich that pay more tax than they consume. Any single or childless couple that receives a W2 from their employer likely does also. Obama is the only hope for fiscal discipline in this country. Today's Republicans are not your Father's Republicans. There is nothing conservative about them, fiscally or anything else. It's a shame what they did to this country. "

marley wrote on May 15, 2008 8:55 AM:

" Mack, so what you are saying then is most of us are being subsidized by the rich? You are probably right. Only half of the people in this country pay any income tax at all and the top 5% of earners account for something like 80% of all income taxes paid. But, that is not enought for Obama who wants them to pay an even higher %. Probably not a good idea. "

Mack wrote on May 15, 2008 6:38 AM:

" Kind is right that we should not subsidize farmers making millions of dollars per year, but we should also not subsidize the oil companies making billions. There are not many taxpayers left that actually pay more taxes than they consume. Even families with good jobs and kids in public education consume more taxes than they pay. "
