Anchor resurfaces; the Navy had it

.
The anchor is back. Then again, it was never really stolen.

Commander Kurt Hedberg told La Crosse police today that the anchor was removed by the Navy, as it was federal property. Hedberg said that once the building was returned to the city, he was supposed to remove all federal property from the site, including the anchor.
The 6-foot-tall, 2,000-pound gray-blue anchor with wrap-around black chain anchor in front of the Naval Reserve Center at 2226 Green Bay St. made national news Monday after it was reported stolen on Saturday by Tom Sweeney, chairman of the Naval Reserve Center Memorial Oversight Committee. It was said it had been stolen between Dec. 31, 2007, and Wednesday, according to police reports.

The anchor was never assigned to a ship and is not an official navy anchor, Sweeney said. The anchor had sat outside the building since it was commissioned in 1949.

The U.S. Navy ceased operations at the center on May 25, 2007, and the facility was turned over to the city Dec. 31.

WoW!

" Being allergic to a cat, and being a kid under 18 that got into scrapes kept me from being a Naval officer ... tell me how that's fair again? "

" NAVY VET, and to answer you about my recruiter telling me to lie,,, he was right, if I was a good liar, I would have been accepted. BUT I was honest and it bit me in the behind.

I slipped up, the recruiter told me to answer all the questions "no" regarding health ... I was honest and said I was allergic to cats and thought, how would that stop me ..... but it did, that and 3 misdemeanors as a kid ... you'd be bitter too, betcha. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 11:12 PM:

" NAVY VET, man, you are brainwashed ... you were a good grunt. Officers have to think and make tough choices, grunts just 'do what you're told'. Yes, I do know plenty, even though I didn't serve, doesn't mean I'm not entitled to my educated opinion bud.

I would forgo my freedoms you mention if our country had no homeless and nobody went hungry, you have to agree there are aspects of this country that just make you scratch your head and wonder. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 11:08 PM:

" Marines Wife, lol, ya, it wasn't meant for me, even though the counselor told me if I had been accepted, he would be offering me officer training. I had just graduated in machining, and had all the math fresh in my head and breezed through all aspects of testing.

Their hangup was that I had 3 misdemeanors while I was under 18! That was during peace time in the Clinton years though, so they could be choosy ... now their accepting you if you breath. "

NAVY VET wrote on May 21, 2008 7:40 PM:

" Freedoms? How about speech, press, religion, right to assemble, to name a few. Or how about the freedom to give your opinion or post on this blog? Freedom to choose to serve in the military, go to college, or get a job. Freedom to choose your own destiny. Freedom to get in your car and drive, or walk, or bike anywhere in the country you choose to. Heck, your even free to choose to live in another country! "

NAVY VET wrote on May 21, 2008 7:33 PM:

" You sure seem to know ALL about the military from someone who never even served. Blaming your recruiter is a cop out, you lied you're responsible, simple as that. Yes, the suicide rate has risen. The problem is veterans return home to find an understaffed, under-funded, under-equipped VA health system, a problem that goes back decades. As far as being repressed, I was one of those lower level grunts, I had options as did my friends and those I know who are in the military now. We choose to serve. You assume we join because its either the military or being homeless. Far from it. You sound to me like someone who is bitter and can't get over the fact the military really didn't want you.
"

Marines Wife wrote on May 21, 2008 4:58 PM:

" I understand how you feel. However, don't take it out on everyone else. Military wasn't meant for you. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 3:50 PM:

" Marines Wife, bitter, you bet.

Am glad I was denied, you bet.

(glad now because I'm older and realize what its all about) "

Marines Wife wrote on May 21, 2008 2:52 PM:

" Honest Abe-it finally makes sense. You wanted to join and you were denied. Need I say more-you are a bitter person. Not everything in life goes as you plan. "

recruiters signing people up at prison, tell me they love their country and our laws LOL

No, not all people that join are repressed with no future, but the military sure targets them, that, you can't disagree with. Few, such as yourself, joined because it was the right thing to do, but that is not the norm.

Not everyone can get to officer status, so it takes many lower leveled grunts to make it work, which is where the repressed people will wind up.

I scored very high at the MEPS testing, to officer scores, but was denied due to my recruiter telling me to lie on my entry papers. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 1:19 PM:

" NAVY VET, China has a low unemployment rate, doesn't let stupid people breed, and nobody goes hungry, as well, they need no free clinics.

There are no Bill Gates with wallets worth billions, as well, there is no need for homeless shelters.

Just because we've been told all our lives we are the greatest, we're the toughest, we're the best ... doesn't mean it is so.

What are our freedoms in this country? Free to be unemployed, free to have 10 kids, even though you can't afford them (future soldiers), free to be able to live out of your car?

China has been around a LOT longer than us, and by our govt (new kid on the block) to boast we're the best, instead of learning from our neighbors, is a little ludacris and naeive. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 1:12 PM:

" Senior Advocate, lol, did you forget to take your meds?

Funny you mention critical thinking, yet, can't think for yourself and see the truth in the world. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 1:11 PM:

" NAVY VET, because they love their country? That's why the suicide rate is increasing so much by active soldiers?

If everyone joined JUST because they love their country, why then are they recruiting at prison, and offering college money to high schoolers if you make it out alive? Why, because those are repressed people that have no other options, period. It should be voluntary, for love of country, but that isn't the real world.

Once our govt takes care of us inside the borders as good as those outside, I may have a different attitude, but as things are, hogwash.

I think you're a bit brainwashed. "

Senior Advocate wrote on May 21, 2008 8:15 AM:

" HonestAbe: Our lack of properly educating our children in factual world affairs and critical thinking, are some of the reasons why we wind up with those such as you. At this rate the ignorance percentage of our population will be 90% in few short years. "

NAVY VET wrote on May 21, 2008 5:51 AM:

" HonestAbe, the people who join the military do so for the same ultimate reason; because they love their country. We want to do our part to ensure the freedoms and rights America has today are there for future generations to enjoy, just as the generations that came before us did. Had no one ever been willing to step and preserve and protect our freedoms, America would be a much different place. Visit a place like China where the Government tells them what to do, think, act, work & take a look at what could have been here had our military not been there to preserve the freedoms our founding fathers put into place. That's the big picture, not what's currently going on. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 2:19 AM:

" Marines Wife, yes, I do know what I'm talking about, my opinion.

I hadn't realized Saddam was threatening to invade, hmm

Have we caught Osama, oh, guess not, he has a new tape coming out soon.

If there was a draft, I must have missed the news.

hmm "

NAVY VET wrote on May 20, 2008 7:52 PM:

" Marines Wife, many THANKS to YOU and your husband for your service and sacrifice to our country. Because of people like your husband, we have the freedoms we do, even if some people on here apparently don't appreciate them. It takes a tough person to be a military spouse, believe me I DO know because I've walked in your shoes too (I'm a vet and a military spouse). The people who post on here may not show their appreciation, but believe me, a majority of people here ARE supportive and appreciative. So from an old Navy Vet and a fellow military spouse I say to you and your husband, SEMPER FI SHIPMATE!! "

Marines Wife wrote on May 20, 2008 7:25 PM:

" HonestAbe-do you have any idea what you are talking about? My husband joined after 9/11 to protect our freedoms. He didn't join for him he joined the USA. And, ynnek never said he/she was in the military-you assume. Doesn't matter if it is Bush or any other president-this war was bound to happen. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 20, 2008 6:31 PM:

" ynnek, you protect our freesoms how? Saddam never threatened to invade us ... and uh ... there was no draft. So, that only means, you support Bush and his illegal war, since you signed the dotted line and entered the military.

We don't owe you anything, you did that for you.

We're being invaded from the South, and yet, nobody does squat, stop that invasion, and I may change my mind. "

My husband is preparing to leave me for his 3rd deployment to ensure that you can enjoy all of the freedoms that you have come accustomed to. It is people like you that my husband lays down his life for. You either don't have family in the military or you are just that ignorant and don't care. I feel sorry for people like you. "

" Rather than incompetence, I'd say this was an impressive display of record keeping on someone's part. It was commissioned in 1949, almost 50 years ago, was never used by the Navy on a ship, yet someone kept track of it after all these years. After the building was returned to the city, it should've been removed by Cmdr. Hedberg. When he failed to comply, someone decided to do it for him. I think most modern businesses would've written off that unused anchor years ago. "
