Amish family from Jackson County involved in fatal Missouri crash

.
A couple and their young son from the town of Franklin in Jackson County were injured in an accident Friday morning near Kansas City that killed a Tomah man and his son.

Jonas Borntreger, an Amish leader in Franklin, said this morning the couple is still in Missouri recovering from injuries. They were in Missouri to attend two family weddings, he said.
Benjamin Yoder, 45, died Monday morning, while 4-mouth-old son Levi died shortly after the crash, according to police in Grandview, Mo. According to police reports, the van had 13 people, ranging in age from 4 months to 74 years, all from Tomah and the town of Franklin.

The crash happened about 10:06 a.m. Friday when the van and an SUV collided near Hwys. 71 and 150, sending the van into a center concrete barrier, where it overturned. Several people in the van were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the vehicle, while others had to be extricated from the wreckage, said Grandview police Sgt. John McKinstry.

Twelve van passengers were taken to five Kansas City area hospitals, while Levi Yoder was flown to Truman Medical Centers, where he later died.

McKinstry said it appeared all of the occupants in the van were Amish. Six had been treated and released as of Monday and the others had been upgraded to serious but stable condition, according to police.

The driver of the SUV was not injured. Police still are trying to determine what caused the crash.

Borntreger said the Franklin man had his jaw broken and has other facial injuries and his wife suffered leg injuries. Their 1-year-old child was ejected from the van but was apparently uninjured.

Borntreger said a funeral for the Yoders in Tomah may be Friday.

" Whoever wrote the comments about how and what amish do is there own belief. They know the consequences of what could happen to them just like other people know the consequences of getting into a car and not wearing a seatbelt. Everyone from each ethnicity of life has different lifestyles, and its not write to degrade other lifestyles of people. They are people like anyone else is and has there own beliefs and lifestyles. Have some compassion for people that have been in a tragic accident instead of making crude comments. "

" Pack, why such animosity toward the Amish? Your comments sound very bitter, which is unecessary when we're blogging about an unfortunate accident. I happen to know many Amish and I can guarantee you that they know what it means to work to support themselves, their families and their community. We stupid English pay the government for that. "

" Well I am a driver for Amish and know for a fact if the driver wants them to use car seats and or seat belts the majority of them will.
Why do our people have to make a joke out of a serious matter.
The Amish work hard for what they have, and don't rely on welfare, Social Security or other subsides our people do. "

" mk...I work in law enforcement. I know that is not their belief to use car and infant seats. And that is the truth. "

" No, the driver was not Amish. He was a man from the Tomah area. "

" Onawom1-How do you know whether or not the Amish use child or infant seats? Are you Amish? Have you hung around with them long enough to make such a blanketed statement? It was an accident that unfortunately ended in the loss of life. Show some compassion. "

" All the occupants of the van were Amish? Even the driver? Have they changed their beliefs? The Amish I know are not permitted to operate any motor vehicle.

" Some do and some don't. When you have a big family like most of them, it's hard to fit that many car seats and adults in a vehicle to haul everyone someplace. Yes, I know what the law says, that all children under the age of 6 are suppose to be restrained. I see many of our people with unrestrained children, also. "

" That is so incredibly sad. As the mother of an 8 month old, I can't imagine losing my baby...my thoughts are with the family. "

" conscience?...no, the Amish do not have car and infant seats...whether they are in a car or a horse buggy....it's very irresponsible for a group of people who claim to live life the right way... "

" How horrible. I feel so bad for all involved.
Does anyone know if the Amish use infant and child seats for their children when they travel in cars? "
