Slow-no wake zone added on Mississippi’s main channel

.
A slow-no wake zone will take effect later this week on the Mississippi River’s main channel along the downtown La Crosse area, officials said Tuesday.

The new zone will be marked with buoys Friday from the southern tip of Taylor Island, near where the Black River meets the Mississippi, south to the north end of Isle la Plume, said La Crosse City Planner Larry Kirch.
The zone means boaters in that roughly 1-mile stretch of river must drop their speed as low as possible to still safely navigate while not creating a wake, Kirch said.

The section now has a 30 mph limit.

The La Crosse Common Council had approved the slow-no wake zone in 2006, but it took time to obtain state and federal authorization, Kirch said. The La Crosse County Board also recently endorsed the slow-no wake zone, as the sheriff’s department is the main enforcer of boating ordinances.

The slow-no wake zone was aimed at keeping larger crafts from throwing wakes that could endanger people boarding pleasure boats, including the La Crosse Queen and Julia Belle Swain and boaters at the city’s transient boat docks in Riverside Park. City workers also had said the wakes damaged city docks.

Boaters who opposed the move at 2006 hearings said the zone would discour-age boating and can’t be enforced.

Several other communities along the Mississippi River’s main channel — Winona, Wabasha, Lake City and Red Wing in Minnesota; Alma, Wis., and Marquette, Iowa — already have similar slow-no wake zones, Kirch said.

This sentence alone tells people you don't spend enough time on the water to know what you're talking about. Barges not only create some of the biggest wakes there are, they can come up on you real quick - even several 100 yards from when you might expect them to.

Anyone who spends time on the water can pick ou the comments from those who don't.

" There should be a no wake zone from the I 90 bridge all the way to crater island. I am tired of fighting the huge wakes left by cruisers that belong on the ocean, Bass boats that feel the need to come as close as possible to other boaters and on both sides of other craft which makes it near impossible to navigate into the wakes. Barges are the least of the problem and leave a smaller wake than a lot of the other water craft. Personally, I stay off the river on weekends, all the ignorant novices seem to be let out of their cages than. Hopefully high gas prices will thin out the taffic. "

" Turnkey - how did all your blame get put onto Bass boats?? They aren't even the topic of conversation here. You sound like another weekend warrior moron who doesn't know the first thing about boating or boater safety for that matter....For the 100 millionth time....Bass boats aren't the problem and neither are their wakes. There are a few bad apples in every genre of boater, stop putting the blame on bass fisherman...and then get a clue. "

" Waste of money and waste of time installing the buoys and patroling if it happens. Some things are better off left alone. "

Wave runners, skiers, tuna boats, barges, and yes bass boats. "

" You guys got to be kidding. Apparently in the LaCrosse area, and on the Mississippi, if you have a bass boat you can be the biggest idiot on the water. The faster you can go the better, and if you should happen to swamp some poor old fisherman, all the better. If it were up to me the sheriff would have a dozen patrol boats on the river and write everyone of those snakes a high priced citation and take away their toy. The best thing that can happen to a bass boat is to sink in the wake a a large barge. Do that fast, Please.. "

I'm wondering if you are the fella with the dock building business...not exactly impartial if you are...

Hello Tribune! Can you get a reporter that will ask and answer some basic questions? "

Captain Ron wrote on May 21, 2008 7:22 PM:

" Donatello you are partially right in way. Now people will be able to dock at Riverside and walk downtown to eat or shop without their boat being pounded against the dock. "

" My flat throws a lot bigger waves when i'm trying to dodge the current and the wind going through the current slow no wakes. Being an avid boater, i guess i agree somewhat. During the weekends that area of the river is dangerous for any small boat. Doesn't matter, with $5 gasoline, we will all be using trolling motors or fishing from shore! "

Donatello wrote on May 21, 2008 5:54 PM:

" Half of this is shameless profiteering by the taxpayer leach City/Private LaCrosse Queen operation getting special treatment. To hell with the majority of people that have to idle for 20 minutes to get to finally go fishing.
Inconvenience the travelers, slow them down so they will finally stop and buy something. That is exactly why we have to STOP half a dozen times going through downtown traffic lights. This is part of the reason for now going after the boaters and soon the airplanes will be required to idle over town too...just to be fair.
Don't laugh...I've seen dumber ideas out of these clowns...in the name of tourism and profit for the select few in the ruling class. "

Captain Ron wrote on May 21, 2008 1:05 PM:

" You're wrong DBL LUNG. When the water level is normal the current is only about 3-4 mph and will make very little difference. Most other communities on the river have a similar ordinance and it works fine. "

DBL LUNG wrote on May 21, 2008 12:31 PM:

" "Slow No Wake is the the slowest possible speed at which you can maintain control of your vessel."
Just wait till the first few boats attempt to go at slow controlled speed up the river. Because the boat will be drafting more water the wakes will be as large as ever and then the people will really whine. This is one of those ordinances that is a catch all because of the flow of the current. A true no win situation. "

doctor wrote on May 21, 2008 10:44 AM:

" Buoys are a good start, but ENFORCEMENT is really lacking in this area. I've seen more and more large "yachts" blowing by the La Crosse Queen dock at high speed, causing their floating dock bounce dangerously. Somebody please post a patrol boat out there this year for safety's sake. "

Frank Zissou wrote on May 21, 2008 9:48 AM:

" Once again a few ruined it for the many. Like Abe was saying speed isn't the main factor its the boats hull design, deeper the draft more water you throw. Maybe they should tax those 2 gallon per mile guzzlers for pushing more water too. Slow No Wake is the the slowest possible speed at which you can maintain control of your vessel. So just stay out of control, and you can go faster.... "

Captain Ron wrote on May 21, 2008 8:15 AM:

" The ordinance is a good idea but was a long time coming. I'm glad they are finally going to start enforcing it. "

Uncle Ted wrote on May 21, 2008 7:44 AM:

" Typical Abe blaming bass fisherman for everything. Why are you such a hater? Let's look at the real reasons they gave for passing this dumb ordinance. Safety for the LAX Queen and whatever that other boat is called. I've ridden on the Queen dozens of times and never once felt like it was dangerous getting on board. I'm sure many of you have done the same. If there are/were any incidents/accidents - i'd like to see the documentation/data that concluded it was b/c of boat wakes....Odds are there are slim to none. Everyday Fisherman, Weekend warriors, Yes Abe - tourney fisherman too, along with recreational boating bring in more money into this town that the LAX Queen ever will. Our highly river using City Council needs to rethink where their tourism dollars are coming from....b/c it isn't from a paddleboat. "

GOD_HIMSELF wrote on May 21, 2008 6:55 AM:

" are they planning on rerouting barges or something. they make a big wake no matter how fast they're going. "

dbl lung wrote on May 21, 2008 6:33 AM:

" Most bass boats and smaller fishing boats make a bigger wake the slower they go, especially traveling against the current when more throttle has to be used to keep the boat moving. So lets not blame the bass boats. It is the tunaboats (cruisers) that cause the problems. This ordinance is a joke. "

" Abe:
Don't you know tourney guys are exempt. Their
"special". Last year I watched 50 boats assemble at the clinton street landing before it was even close to dawn. 3 boats were in compliance with the county lighting laws that the river patrol arbitrarily enforces. I was stopped in the no wake zone in the PM and was told to put lights on even thought I had to shade my eyes from the sun glareing over the back of one of the cops. Tourneys rule. "

HonestAbe wrote on May 21, 2008 2:16 AM:

" """The section now has a 30 mph limit."""

That sure wasn't being enforced at all a few Saturdays ago, when the bass tourney broke loose.

Boat after boat for more than 20 minutes, pushing their limits sped by ... doing I'd guess 40mph - 60mph. Imagine the revenue ... lost.

Good luck enforcing it! "
