La Crosse Park Rec superintendent taking job in Prairie du Chien

.
La Crosse Recreation Superintendent Mike Ulrich is leaving to head the parks and recreation department in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

“I was looking for a director position,” he said. “My goal has been that for quite a while.”
Prairie du Chien had the advantage of being on this side of the state, he added. He’s slated to start June 2.

Ulrich was a finalist last year to replace Bob Berg as La Crosse’s director of parks and recreation but lost out to Steve Carlyon, a 24-year veteran of parks and rec with the federal government.

Ulrich has worked for the city’s parks department for more than 25 years, the past 19 as recreation superintendent.

“I consider Prairie similar to what I came into in La Crosse. It didn’t have a whole lot of recreation programs,” he said. “I’m hoping not to make wholesale changes but to enhance what they already have.”

The community’s rec center has a lot of potential, Ulrich said. “That’s one thing I thought would be interesting coming in,” he added.

Carlyon credited Ulrich for building the city’s rich youth recreation network.

“Mike was really instrumental in taking the La Crosse parks and recreation and growing it beyond a system of parks,” he said.

Ulrich founded the Youth Enrichment Association to promote recreational programs for kids. And his passion for fishing evolved into a federally funded program called “Take me fishing,” said Carlyon.

“One of the things I found when I first got here was Mike’s philosophy on giving kids the opportunity to play,” Carlyon said. “Mike really developed the neighborhood play system, so kids of all skills and abilities can play and have fun.”

" I am glad to see him go. Just because you are second in line, does not gaurantee you the next step. Maybe the department heads saw that something was lacking. Say for instance a personality? "

" What did you expect. They up passed this guy and lured a handpicked bull in a china shop to implement their direction. Yes, just like they brought in Ken Dentice to do the same. The previous poster is right, with this bunch in charge of our City they are continually scanning for money. The are broke! He has pee-owed the hockey parents, copeland boathouse and marina owners, non-sensical/expensive audit of Pettibone Campground, etc, etc. In regard to baseball and fields? On one hand they argue Logger's Field is open/public. BS!, they have chased even charitable events to Erickson from there. "

" To: AS

Mens "ASA" softball is about 1/1,000,000th of what Mike is/was responsible for while employed as the Recreation Superintendent at the City of La Crosse. Besides, most of you "ASA" players would complain if you were hung with a new rope anyway. Maybe Mr. Carlyon dressed in his suit and tie can help you move the fence back at Erickson. Mike Ulrich made the City of La Crosse a much better place to live through his work at the Recreation Department. And I'd like to THANK him for that, not criticize him for it. Good luck, Mike, in your new employment in Prairie du Chien. WE will miss you! "

" WRONG!!! The park and rec needs a change. Now that Mike is leaving, maybe when can get that change. They are always looking for ways to earn profits yet the concession stand stays empty at Erickson. We have ASA leagues now playing (finally) that attract some out of town teams, but then they play them at Erickson instead of Carol or Houska???? Talk about boring games to watch when every other ball fly's out of the park. Change is needed!!! "

" Isn't it pretty obvious that Mike is/was/will always be very disappointed that he wasn't chosen to succeed Bob Berg back in 2007? Once again, La Crosse felt the fruitless need to go outside to fill a Department Head position when they had a perfect replacement already on staff. Basically they told Mike back in 2007 that he wasn't good enough after 24/18 years of employment. How would that make you feel? Good luck, Mike, and to the rest of your family too. The City leaders at City Hall don't realize it yet, but the people of La Crosse will miss you. "
