GOP candidate Stark visiting Alaska’s ANWR to research oil drilling

.
Republican congressional candidate Paul Stark of Eau Claire said Thursday he’ll fly to Alaska this month to learn about drilling for oil in the arctic.

In La Crosse on Thursday, Stark said he and several other GOP congressional candidates are going to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on their own.
“It’s just a fact-finding mission. We’re going as private citizens. We’re all paying our own way. There is no big oil money or anything helping us with this,” Stark said.

“People are suffering economically because of these high fuel prices, and I feel as Americans we need to explore all different forms of American energy, and there are many different forms,” he said. “I think ANWR seems to be the centerpiece. It’s not the end-all and be-all. It’s not the only place we need to explore.”

Stark’s Democratic opponent, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse, has voted in the past against drilling in ANWR, citing concerns about the environment, the length of time it would take to bring that oil to market and its limited effect on prices. He has advocated conservation and development of alternative fuels.

According to The Hill, a newspaper covering Congress, Stark will be joined by Craig Williams from Pennsylvania, Chris Lien of South Dakota, and Luke Puckett and Mike Sodrel, both of Indiana.

Stark said the group will fly to Anchorage on July 14, then to Fairbanks on July 15, where they’ll take a chartered plane to the Arctic Circle for the day.

They’ll fly over the entire area, then land and meet with the mayor of Barrow, at the northernmost tip of Alaska. Stark said they also hope to meet with other officials before returning July 17.

ANWR is a 19 million acre reserve in northeast Alaska, and drilling for oil there has been the subject of debate for decades, in part because of the potential for harm to wildlife there. Recent high fuel prices have accelerated calls for drilling to increase the domestic oil supply.

" Sorry mullman71: We have been selling our domestic oil to places like Japan and China for years. All that ANWR would do is allow oil companies to sell more domestic oil to the highest foreign bidder. Will it drop our prices? Nope, not one penny. Why? By using the most recent proof that gas prices averaged $4.10/gallon this last week, up 2 cents/gallon from the previous week which was a record high. All the use of our strategic reserve did was prevent an even larger increase pricewise while the domestic oil production is being used by profitteers who could care less about America's energy needs. Such greed will not help America in the short term. This is why we should not drill in ANWR. Why risk our environment when reality shows no real progress unless you're an oil profitteer? "

" Also, as our own oil starts entering the market, the price will drop even further. At the same time, this short term solution will buy us more time to let high tech alternatives mature and make a difference. Then, in the long term, we can sell the oil we don't use to our foreign neighbors and help fix our trade deficit. How can we go wrong with these kinds of short term and long term solutions? "

" About a month ago or so the Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, voted to divert oil from the strategic reserve to the market. If they believe that adding a couple thousand barrels of oil into the market is a good idea than why are so many of them opposed to adding a couple million barrels of oil from the Gulf of Mexico and coastal areas? It seems to me that a serious effort on our part would seriously calm the speculators down and the price would drop within months. "

" Paul Stark will only prove one thing: the GOP stands for profits over responsibility or people. Kill the wildlife to enrich the oil companies bottom line. This oil will DO NOTHING TO LOWER GAS PRICES OR HEATING BILLS! It won't even slow it down. What must be done is stop the speculators from driving up crude oil prices. They, along with oil companies before it gets to the pumps, are raking the American public. Its not the Kwik Trips or the other final destination spots that are making the killing; it happens before they get it to you. "

" Leave the ANWR alone! There are plenty of untapped offshore leases the oil industry hasn't even bothered to explore yet. Let's take advantage of that first. Better yet, invest in alternative energies. Rescind the subsidies to the oil companies and give them to wind and solar energy companies. "

" Republican or Democrat, you gotta like the fact that he is going up there to see for himself. "

" Ron Kind is a perfect politician, handsome, smart, and worthless.

If we had any brains we would elect someone this time who has guts and will make something happen.

Stark is a real opportunity. "
