A: According to Tribune files, La Crosse’s Logan High School is indirectly named after John A. Logan, an American Army officer from Illinois who gained fame as a Union general during the Civil War and who is credited with naming May 30, 1868, the first Memorial Day.
Logan died in 1886, and in 1888, La Crosse honored him by renaming Cameron Street on the North Side to Logan Street, ending the confusion with Cameron Avenue on the South Side. In 1892, a public elementary school was erected at Logan and Avon streets and was named “The Logan Street School” because of its proximity to Logan Street.
The Logan name later carried over to a junior high school built near the elementary school in 1922 and the high school that opened nearby in 1928.
If not for the street name change in 1888, Logan today could be known as Cameron High School.
