Good eats: Riverfest is a celebration of food

.
Riverside Park is swelling with festgoers and the foods they love.

The busy food thoroughfare at this year’s Riverfest, which sports no less than 16 area food vendors, serves up choices sure to satisfy any palette.

Jack Kappler, who owns Good Eatts Catering, ran around handing garlic and wine sauteed mushrooms on a toothpick to everyone in sight.

“This is our first year,” Kappler said. “You gotta train the public. Once they eat it, they’re hooked.”

The long lines at the Rocky’s Supper Club booth indicated the crowd was already hooked on their cheese curds.

Manager Jaynne Lepke said the Stoddard, Wis., supper club has had a booth at Riverfest since the fest’s second year, and it can sell up to 4,000 pounds of cheese curds during the festival.

This year, she ordered 2,800 pounds, she said, and she always is worried they’ll run out. She also said she gets burned to a crisp working over the vats of oil.

“The reason we continue to put ourselves through the abuse year after year is because it’s great advertising for our restaurant,” Lepke said.

Teresa Pretasky, banquet manager at Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club in Holmen, Wis., said it’s a chance for her restaurant to show off one of its popular menu items — the Chatwich.

To make the cheese, ham and tenderloin tips sandwich on a Kaiser bun, the restaurant will go through about 70 pounds of tips every day, she said.

They’ve spent a week getting ready for the event, Pretasky said, and they’ve seen a lot of folks stop by to eat.

“The weather has been absolutely perfect. We don’t usually get weather like this for Riverfest,” she said.

The good weather is expected to continue through today, with a chance of afternoon showers on Sunday, the festival’s final day.

" I'll admit to becoming jaded about fireworks and parades, especially since the kids grew up--you've seen one, you've seen them all. Also, I refuse to pay for the privilege of buying food. The ultimate insult is to have any part of a park which is normally open to the public being closed off unless you have paid. This community seems unable to have a celebration where drinking and eating are not at its center. "

" You had me at "cheese curds"!

If the cheese curds came from the "Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin" in Ellsworth, WI ~ then you had the BEST! They sold 104,000 pounds to the MN State Fair last year!

The Governor of Wisconsin proclaimed this creamery the "Cheese Curd Capital" for many reasons!

100% All Natural Premium Cheddar Cheese Curds are their #1 - and only specialty product.
They only accept rBST free milk!

Remember to look for the "white" cheese curds. The color of rich, fresh milk!
Question: Have you ever drank a glass of orange milk?

Check out their web site...

YUMMY! "

" Riverfest has turned in to RiverFLOP. Same old same old. Book some lame act from the 80's and a hypmotist and a bunch of local food you can get any other day of the week if you want. Times have become desperate at RiverFlop, now you have to pay to get in the park. Next year there will probably be a new sales tax to cover the costs. "

" i'm just curious why they still call this 'RiverFest'. i haven't seen one story or event yet with the river involved. all it seems to be is about the food. maybe change the name to 'FoodFest'? "

" I am surprised the Tribune isn't spouting how bad for you all the fried cheese curds, ice cream, cotton candy and all the junk food + soda sold at these festivals! Where is the article on food safety at the fest? Where was all the police presence to keep drunks from the river? How about the smokers in the park and dangerous fireworks too? Terry really missed his chance to force his views on you! "

" I agree jefferyf...the fireworks were terrific. It was a great night to watch them and judging by the reactions of the crowd, they were thoroughly enjoyed by 99.9% of the people there. "

" I thought the fireworks were great this year-- good crowd and an awesome show! People who complain about free entertainment should stay home and watch TV (i.e., dalelock1968). "

" Take away the Beer Tent and Riverfest and Ocktoberfest go away! Truth, most of the profit comes from that. "
