IRS reminds retirees, disabled veterans to file for economic stimulus payments

The Internal Revenue Service is reminding retirees and disabled veterans to file a 2007 federal tax return to claim economic stimulus payments.

About 77,000 retirees and disabled veterans in Wisconsin qualify for the payment but so far have not filed to claim it, IRS officials said. Nearly 76 percent of the people in this group from Wisconsin have filed.

The IRS estimates that number includes 1,625 people in La Crosse County as well as 312 in Crawford County, 397 in Jackson County, 521 in Juneau County, 610 in Monroe County, 454 in Trempealeau County and 544 in Vernon County.

They must file a tax return before Oct. 15 to receive their economic stimulus payments this year.

“Some retirees and others who normally do not file a tax return may be eligible and not know it,” said Doug Shulman, IRS commissioner.

“It only takes a few minutes for people not otherwise required to file an income tax return to file Form 1040A with basic information to ensure they receive their payment if they qualify,” said Christopher Miller, IRS spokesman for Wisconsin.

IRS officials said the agency is working with members of Congress, state and local officials and national organizations such as AARP to continue outreach efforts to retirees and veterans through the summer.
