Police say motorcycle chase hit 130 mph

.
A Holmen, Wis., man was charged with felony attempt to flee a police officer after he reportedly tried to elude police on his motorcycle at speeds as high as 130 mph.

Justin R.E. Mommaerts, 22, was arrested June 22 after a 15-mile chase on Wisconsin roads that started on Hwy. 25 south of Durand and ended in Pepin, according to police reports.
Buffalo County Sheriff’s Investigator Lee Engfer said the chase began about noon after he tried to stop Mommaerts for speeding on Hwy. 25 in Maxville.

Mommaerts tried to get away and topped out at over 120 mph when chased south on Hwy. 25, Engfer said.

At the junction of 25 and State Hwy. 35 just north of Nelson, Engfer said Mommaerts turned north on 35 and sped up again.

Engfer punched his police cruiser up to 130 mph but was still losing ground. He guessed Mommaerts might have reached speeds close to 150 mph.

When approaching Pepin, Wis., on Hwy. 35, Mommaerts slowed and eventually pulled over and stopped on Dunn Street in Pepin, Engfer said.

Mommaerts was in circuit court in Alma on June 25 when a $1,000 signature bond was ordered, and he waived the time limit for having a preliminary hearing.

Buffalo County Circuit Court Judge James Duvall continued the case to July 23.

" I am not sure the cop is any smarter than the 22 year old!! how dumb was that!! the cop himself could have killed, or a family with small children in a car. I don't think that was smart at all!! He should be charged with reckless driving! "

" Bearcat, aren't most of the "top police experts" elected by the people or appointed by elected officials? Most police chiefs and sheriff's regurgitate what the public (their constituents) wants to hear. Any other "expert" who has never been in uniform is uninformed. "

" Those that are against police chases would also complain if the police didn't try to stop someone from driving drunk, recklessly, or both and they ended up killing someone anyway. Just because you stop chasing them doesn't mean the fleeing person's driving will improve. If the police were chasing them for their poor driving behavior wouldn't you want them off the road??? Armchair police are never happy with police performance in a not-so-perfect environment. "

" Mack, You might want to check your facts. Most motorcycles are very high gas mileage vehicles. I have two large bikes, a Harley cruiser and a Kawasaki touring bike. Both get well over 50 mpg. The guy running 150mph probably is getting in the 30's but normal driving yields high gas mileage. "

" People that support this chase are the reason we can't kick old habbits in society. Police chases have consistently been proven a danger to society and the benefit vs. risk has been questioned many times by top experts IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD. Do you really think this cop feels he was doing justice by catching this guy or was he probably more lickin his chops at going fast...

Most agencies actually have policies AGAINST police chases that endanger the public like this. "

" Let one go just because it isn't worth the risk of chasing him and soon enough many more will follow. Those on the outer fringe of obeying our traffic laws soon feel they can do anything. The cops won't chase them, after all. I read of one incident like this where the motorcyclist was eluding at high speed and went broadside into a pickup truck. I really couldn't feel sorry for him. "

" Re: Devon and Jerome. Does that make you feel better to say hurtful things about police officer Kerr? GROW UP! Personal slams like that have nothing to do with the article! I wouldn't know Officer Kerr in a crowd of TWO, but I do know that if someone said that about me or someone I cared about, I would be outraged. If you want to hurt people, go ahead and keep writing stupid, unrelated slams about others that have nothing to do with the article that was written! What comes around, goes around! "

Willie wrote on Jul 5, 2008 9:35 AM:

" I suppose maybe the cops shouldn't chase anybody. The cops should just wait and clean up the mess afterward. Heck, maybe the cops shouldn't investigate crime either. They should just take reports and wait for criminal's consciences to get the better of them and turn themselves in. Hey we already turn around and let them loose on an ankle bracelet. Why bother at all? "

Willie wrote on Jul 5, 2008 9:29 AM:

" Yes, it would be worth the motorcycle wiping out at 130 m.p.h. That stuff makes for great dashboard camera footage for TruTV! Bet he wouldn't run from the cops again! This punk should get charged with reckless endangerment. "

" This is extremely serious. No more license for this guy, EVER. You don't get second chances when you do something this severe. If anyone thinks thats harsh, then consider the fact this this bonehead is lucky to be alive. Thats a second chance if I ever heard of one. "

" The police pfficer obviously got a rush too. If not he would have let it go when it hit the 100 mark. I am sure he thought he was in control of his vehicle at all times, but we have seen what happens when the pros make a mistake. The officer should get time off without pay for wreckless endangerment. "

Mack wrote on Jul 5, 2008 8:54 AM:

" Rafter57 is absolutely right. Speeding violations do not warrant this kind of high speed chase. VERY BAD JUDGEMENT on the part of police. Also very bad judgement on the part of motorcycle manufacturers when they sell street bikes that can now go 200 mph and get worse gas mileage than a car. It's not what we need and helps explain why motorcycles sales are not doing well when they should be a natural alternative with high gas prices. Motorcycles that get 30 mpg, moped scooters that get 80 mpg and cars that get 50 mpg. Motorcycles need a new brand of innovation, not more of the same bigger, faster, louder. They have been big enough, fast enough and loud enough for decades. "

" I think the bigger question is for the police..."Was it worth endangering their lives and his and perhaps many others to chase him at those speeds for a speeding violation?" Seems not to make too much sense! "

new world order wrote on Jul 5, 2008 6:29 AM:

" O.K....So the guy still got arrested/fined. But seriously, how great is that? Amagine the rush eluding the police at 130 m.p.h! This type of thing doesn't happen frequently, but it's still a reminder to police that just because they want you to pull over doesn't mean that eveyone will obey. "
