McCain’s age an issue for some this election

.
BEAVER DAM, Wis. — Lifelong Republican Steve Smith said his party’s presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain, is too old and that he will vote for Democratic Illinois senator Barack Obama in November.

“I’ve been a Republican all my life, and I think we need a new direction,” said Smith, 52, a mechanical engineer who has started riding his bike to work occasionally to save on gas. “The economy, gas prices, the housing market. I think we need a change.”
McCain, 71, who would be the oldest person ever elected to a first-term as president, “seems a little slow. Obama seems more energetic,” Smith said.

Just as Obama’s race could be a factor for some voters, McCain’s age may prove an insurmountable obstacle for others. What’s more, people who question the Arizona senator’s fitness for office because of his age are more vocal about it in opinion polls — and cite the issue in greater numbers — than those who say they won’t vote for Obama because he’s black.

A Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey of 1,537 likely Wisconsin voters in June found that 20 percent said they would be less likely to vote for McCain because of his age, while 77 percent said it wouldn’t affect how they vote.

A national Gallup Poll in June found that 23 percent of those surveyed said McCain’s age would make him a less effective president. Eight percent said Obama’s race would make him less effective as president.

Others interviewed in Beaver Dam last week said McCain’s age doesn’t disqualify him for the presidency, and it wouldn’t be a factor in their vote.

Elsie Cook, 95, a retired beautician and McCain supporter, said the senator’s age shouldn’t matter.

“As long as that brain works, use it, and he should,” Cook said. “There’s lots of people who are older who have many accomplishments.”

" Age is a factor unless he is unlike mostpeople who tend to get forgetful as they get older. Ronnie got by with alzheimers, goes to show the President doesn't really run the show. Jillary[formerly known as Billary] will be there to run the show for her third term. "

" So a supposed life long Republican isn't going to vote for McCain because of his age? I call BS! I know of conservatives who wont vote for McCain because of his stance on ILLEGAL immigration or other liberal views, but not his age. That being said, they aren't voting for the Marxist-socialist, Obama.

The issues in this election are: cost of Oil (Democrats say "can't" and "no" to drilling and becoming independant), the War on Terror (Obama is for retreating or negotiating with terrorists), Abortion (Obama is for killing babies who survive an abortion attempt), 2nd Amendment (Obama against private ownership), increased government spending (both parties are pigs in that area now).

The person who we trust the most will be elected to lead us on these issues. Obama's judgement of who he has as advisors tells me enough to know that McCain's age is trivial. "

" I have actually heard more disparaging comments made about the fact that McCain seems to have a 'trophy wife.' I don't think his age should be a factor.

I really liked what I heard from McCain in 2000. I also think he is a likable person.

Obama seems more distant than McCain. "

" To RA: He's got Big Oil's money though, doesn't he? "

" If 20% think he is too old and 80% feel it is not a problem then what is the issue? Just beause he is a Republican doesn't mean he sucked up to anyone, he has been open minded and has his own thoughts. He is a soft spoken man, not a complainer. I prefer an experienced and knowledgeable person running the country, steadfast and not easily swayed! If he wins this one, it will be against all odds, he doesn't have the media or the Soros money, and those who watch the MSM and read the papers, which are all left. It is a very bias world out there, everyone has their hand out these days!!! "

" It's not his age but the fact that he sucked up to George Bush in 2004 when he should have run against him. The changes we have seen in John McCain in the last four years have been very sad and make you wonder where he is really coming from. "
