WESTBY, Wis. — Harriet Aspenson, 72, of Westby died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Vosseteig Funeral Home, Westby. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
Lonny Ray Canard
STODDARD, Wis. — Lonny Ray Canard, 59, died Friday, July 18, 2008, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 19, 1948, in La Crosse to Raymond and Elaine (Olson) Canard. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoying the outdoors. Lonny fished commercially for many years. Lonny graduated from Logan Senior High School in 1966 and went on to college, graduating with a bachelor of science degree from Stout University.
He is survived by two sons, Nathan (Dawn) and Tony; one daughter, Michelle; a grandson, Drydin Ray Canard; his mother, Elaine; two brothers, Thomas (Theresa) and Ronald; his fiancee, Julie DuCharme; his former wife, Donna Hedrich; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his dad.
Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette Street, La Crosse, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Francis J. Curti
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Francis J. Curti, 84, of West Salem passed away peacefully Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Genoa, Wis., the son of Anthony and Elizabeth (Malin) Curti. After graduating from Lansing Kee High School (Lansing, Iowa) in 1941, Francis worked on the family farm and enjoyed playing baseball. On Aug. 28, 1954, he married Marion E. Saphner at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse. During the same year, Francis bought the family farm and proceeded to modernize and expand it, constructing new farm buildings and a house. Francis was the proud father of five children and was a hard-working, dedicated farmer. He celebrated the farm’s centennial anniversary in 1979. Francis and Marion retired to West Salem in 1991. In his retirement, he was a loving caregiver for Marion during her extended illness before she died on Jan. 29, 2006. While in West Salem, Francis became a prolific self-taught painter, exhibiting his paintings at the county fair, where he won numerous blue ribbons. He also enjoyed gardening, canning and traveling. Francis will be remembered for many things, among which was his wonderful smile.
Survivors include five children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Curti of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Jon (Joan) Curti of Plover, Wis., Gerard (Amy) Curti of Carthage, Mo., Annette (Scott) Bergum of Hartford, Wis., and Francis (Gabrielle) Curti of Indianola, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Julie, Peter, Madeline, Melanie, Steven, Joseph, Jacob, David, Matthew and Everett; two brothers, William (Joan) Curti of Minneapolis and Charles (Jean) Curti of Onalaska, Wis.; two sisters, Sister Mechtilde Curti, FSPA of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Sister De Sales Curti, FSPA of La Crosse; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Curti of Genoa, Wis.; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Anthony Curti.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 210 W. Hamlin St., West Salem. Father Bob Hegenbarth will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Mausoleum at Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary to be recited at 6:45 p.m. Friends may also call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday. Memorials may be given to Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse.

Carol A. Howe
ONALASKA, Wis. — Carol A. Howe, 53, of Onalaska passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison (Wis.).
She was born in La Crosse on Sept. 22, 1954, to Joe and Harriet (Howard) Guepfer. Carol married Larry Howe on Nov. 20, 1990, in La Crosse.
Carol was a kind and generous person who would always put the needs of others before her own. She dearly loved her family and, in recent years, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her husband, Larry; two sons, Ryan Bilskemper of Holmen, Wis., and David (Jennifer) Fruth of Minnesota City, Minn.; three stepchildren, Kari Helgerson (fiancé, Jason Singkofer) of Trempealeau, Wis., Mandy (Jason) Hess of Onalaska and Michael (Christina) Howe of Galesville, Wis.; five grandchildren, Darrel and Davis Helgerson, Megan and Jossilyn Hess and Ayden Fruth; and her father, Joe Guepfer of La Crosse. She is further survived by two brothers, Howard Guepfer of La Crosse and David (Donna) Guepfer of Onalaska; two sisters, Nancy Guepfer (fiancé, Dave Case) of Ohio and Gail Guepfer of Onalaska; nieces and nephews, Kyle, Kayla and Mckenna Guepfer; and her special companion, her chihuahua Brownie. Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Harriet; George Bilskemper, the father of Ryan and David; and by a sister-in-law, Nancy Powers-Guepfer.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carol’s life at a memorial gathering to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Private burial will take place at Crucifixion Cemetery in La Crescent at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Brice Prairie First Responders in lieu of flowers.
Carol’s family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and the University of Wisconsin Hospital transplant team.
Arlen Richard Mathews
Arlen Richard Mathews, 65, passed away Friday, July 18, 2008, in Gundersen Lutheran Hospital.
Arlen was born to loving parents, Harold and Elizabeth (Smithlin) Mathews, in La Crosse on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 1942. He has now been reunited with his family in heaven.
Arlen attended St. James Catholic School, La Crosse. He worked at St. Rose Convent as assistant gardener throughout high school and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1960. Arlen then joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country. On his return home, Arlen began his employment at Trane Co. in La Crosse and belonged to the Trane 25 Year Club. In his spare time, Arlen’s recreation was hiking the surrounding bluffs and lowlands, grateful for this beautiful country around us. He also enjoyed home projects, and whatever project he chose, the work of his hands showed pride of his heart.
Arlen married his sweetheart, Suzanne Viner, at St. James Catholic Church, and they became proud parents of two wonderful children, Sandra Mathews of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Harold (Maurine) Mathews of Yuma, Ariz. Arlen is also survived by his granddaughters, Madison and Mischa of Yuma. Spending time with his children and granddaughters gave him immense joy, laughter and love, and he in turn gave them memories to cherish forever.
Arlen was born to a family rich in faith and promise. As family historian, he researched and verified stories and values, traveled in spirit on pioneer adventures to this new land and treasured the wonderful people that came before. He is further survived by his brothers, Alfred (Doris) of La Crosse, and Kenneth (Cori) of Hugo, Minn.; and sisters, Arlene (Joseph) Schwabenbauer of La Crosse and Cheryl (Fred) Lanzel of Holmen, Wis.; and sister-in-law, Nancy Mathews; as well as their families. Arlen was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Sue; his parents, Harold and Elizabeth; his brother, Frank; sisters, Jean and Marylou (John); sister-in-law, Donna; and several nephews and nieces.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday in St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia St., La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate, with burial to be held with military honors by Roy L. Vinger’s American Legion Post 52, in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home, 1501 West Ave. South, La Crosse, with a scripture service to be held at 7:30 p.m. Family and friends may also call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until departing for Mass on Thursday.

WESTBY, Wis. — Shantay Marie Schultz, age 32, of rural Westby died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born Oct. 26, 1975, to Walter and Elizabeth (Washburn) Schultz. She had lived in the Wilton/Kendall area early in life. Shantay later attended school at Tomah, Viroqua and graduated from Central High School in La Crosse. At age 18, Shantay made her home with her foster parents, Rick and Kitty Stellick. Shantay has enriched many lives with her special abilities.
She was the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Schultz of King, Wis.; foster daughter of Rick and Kitty Stellick of Westby; sister of Dan (Angie) Schultz of Tomah, Scott (Cindy) Schultz of Kendall and Jeff (Sarah) Schultz of Kendall; foster sister of Carrie Morey, Charles Morey, Rick Stellick II and Eric Stellick; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
