George William Snapp Sr.
George William Snapp Sr., 94, of La Crosse died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was the first born of seven children to Lee and Ruth Hazel (Haslett) Snapp on June 21, 1914, in Momence, Ill. He was baptized, received first communion and confirmed at St. Patrick Church in Momence. Upon graduation from high school, he worked in a Chicago slaughterhouse during the Depression. He moved to the La Crosse area in 1935 to work for three years with the Civilian Conservation Corps, a New Deal program, serving on the recruiting team. He married his wife, Geraldine Kneifl, on Dec. 5, 1936, in Winona, Minn., and they lived in La Crosse, where they raised their family.

George worked for Allis-Chalmers as an inspector, and in 1939, he was hired by The Trane Co. as an assembler in the Plant 2 Large Assembly Department. In 1946, he started a series of promotions at Trane from shift supervisor to assistant foreman to foreman to general foreman. For a brief period during World War II, he moved to Momence with his wife and two sons, where he worked for an ammunitions plant. When they moved back to La Crosse, he resumed his career at Trane. He was a member of the Trane 25 Year Club and was a 1946 charter member of the local unit of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He was always noted as a very skilled, detailed and dedicated employee, an even-tempered supervisor and a well-respected leader. He retired from Trane Co. on June 30, 1979, as a general foreman after 38 years of employment.

George was a determined man with a quiet wisdom. He took great pride in his yard, his home, his genealogy research, staying healthy and remaining in his home as he aged. He was a member with St. Thomas More Parish (now Mother Mary of the Church) and an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. His greatest joy was his family and the numerous family and friend gatherings near and far. George had a witty sense of humor, a special twinkle in his blue eyes, was caring and loving of others in his special way and had a very clear commitment to always do the right thing. He was a perfect gentleman and lived his life with an integrity and dignity that has served as an inspiration to all. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

He is survived by one son, Lee, and daughter-in-law, Sue Snapp, his daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Jack Niedfeldt, and his daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Snapp, all of La Crosse; seven granddaughters, Kristi and husband Todd Macheel of Milwaukee, Jennifer Snapp and fiancé David Nemo of Minneapolis, Tami and husband Mark Kornowski of Oconomowoc, Wis., Heather Snapp of Tucson, Ariz., Kari and husband John Niedfeldt-Thomas of Mounds View, Minn., Kendra and husband Scott Sandy of Babbitt, Minn., and Nicole Niedfeldt and fiancé Erick Mills of La Crosse; one grandson, Erik Snapp of Evanston, Ill.; seven great-grandsons, William Macheel, Russell and Joseph Snapp, Daniel and Evan Niedfeldt-Thomas and Wesley and Ryland Sandy; one great-granddaughter, Katerina Mach-eel; his sisters, Jane Rotondo of Bloomfield, N.J., and Amy Ann Gannon of Peoria, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was preceded in death by wife, Geraldine “Gerry”; son, George W. “Bill” Snapp Jr.; his parents of Momence, Ill.; three brothers, John L. Snapp of Polson, Mont., and Claude E. Snapp and Robert Snapp, both of Momence, Ill.; and one sister, Ruth O. Wyant of Momence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Mother, Mary of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, La Crosse. Private family committal services will be in La Crosse’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

He was a beloved husband and father and loving grandfather and great-grandfather.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Ellen P. White, 87, of Prairie du Chien died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in her home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prairie du Chien Hospice or to St. Peter Lutheran Church Radio Service. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — John L. Hackett, 61, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. SPARTA, Wis. — Elsa M. Pierce Lazarr, 87, of Phoenix and formerly El Centro, Calif., and Sparta died Monday, July 7, 2008, in Phoenix. Graveside memorial services and burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Angelo, Wis. Lanham-Miller Funeral Home of Sparta is assisting the family with arrangements.

SPARTA, Wis. — Sylvia R. Bryhn, 90, of Wausau, Wis., and formerly of Sparta died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Mount View Care Center in Wausau. Geraldine ‘Gerri’ Mitchell

Craig T. Becker

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Craig T. Becker of Wausau, Wis., and formerly of Caledonia died peacefully and unexpectedly of natural causes in his sleep on Friday, July 18, 2008.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1965. He enjoyed his family, friends, sports and his dogs. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his determination to always keep trying.

Craig is survived by seven siblings, Debbie Becker, Gary Becker, Mark Becker, Shirley (Pat) Early, Scott (Angela) Becker, Tony Becker and Ann (Chris) Yule; many nieces and nephews; and a great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Matilda Becker.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at St Mary’s Church in Caledonia.

William ‘Bill’ H. Albert

CALEDONIA, Minn. — William “Bill” H. Albert, 83, of Caledonia died peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Caledonia Care and Rehab with his family at his side.

He was born Feb. 7, 1925, in Forest Lake, Minn., to Henry W. and Ellen (Graf) Albert. He graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and attended the University of Minnesota. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a pilot during World War II. He married Marvel Ratonde on Sept. 15, 1947, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Caledonia.

He and his brother, George, owned Albert’s Grocery Store in Caledonia; Bill worked there from 1949 until his retirement in 1984.

Bill will be remembered for his voracious love of life. He loved to golf, play cards, garden and watch sporting events, especially the Minnesota Twins. His kindness and sense of humor will carry on through future generations … he hopes. He dedicated his life to faith and family. To “serve” had special meaning for Bill, a steady, dependable, long-term server at daily Mass

He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Loveless Eikens American Legion Post 191, VFW Post 3188 and St. Mary’s Church.

Bill is survived by his wife, Marvel of Caledonia; five children, Jane (Bill) Skowronski of Napa, Calif., William S. (Judy) Albert of Caledonia, Sharon (Malcolm) High of Santa Clara, Calif., Julie (Mike) Gerardy of Caledonia and Amy (Jay) Kamin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and a brother, George (Virginia) Albert of Caledonia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stephen; and three sisters, Doris Joyce, Alice Jackson and Mary Ellen Marnach.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate, and burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s School auditorium, 306 E. South St., Caledonia, where a rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church Thursday. Memorials are preferred to Holy Family Hall Kitchen or donor’s choice.

Becky Marsolek

INDEPENDENCE, Wis. —Becky Marsolek, 55, of Independence died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis.

She was born Aug. 14, 1952, in Whitehall, Wis., to Gerald and Blanche (Matchey) Pieterick. She married Conrad Marsolek on Oct. 2, 1980, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Independence.

Becky was a bookkeeper and secretary for Pientok Construction for many years and later was bookkeeper for Tri-City Sanitation. Becky was the Independence city clerk and treasurer for many years until retirement. Becky was a member of the Wisconsin Municipal Clerks and Treasurers’ Associations. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and its Women’s Organization.

Survivors include her husband, Conrad Marsolek of Independence; a son, Cory Marsolek of Independence; a brother, Robert (Pauline) Pieterick of Arcadia, Wis.; niece, Amy Pieterick of Arcadia; nephew, Andrew Pieterick of Arcadia; and other relatives and friends.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Heidi Pieterick.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence, with the Rev. Msgr. Edmund Klimek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Edison Funeral Home in Independence, where there will be a prayer service followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Laurence E. Grant

HOLMEN, Wis. — Laurence E. Grant, 75, went to be with his Lord Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born in St. Paul on Feb. 26, 1933, to Earl and Irma (Egner) Grant. Laurence served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On July 15, 1956, he married Joan Humphrey in Auburn, Neb.

Laurence worked as body shop manager for Ray Hutson Chevrolet for 21 years and then as general manager of the body shop for Gateway Foods and Dahl Auto Repair.

Laurence’s life revolved around his family and his Lord. He liked working on and rebuilding cars, but most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially during the holidays.

Laurence is survived by his love of his life of 52 years, Joan; four children, David (fiancee, Karen Padget) Grant of Chicago, Jolene (Ken) Hauser of Holmen, Dan (Lisa) Grant of Holmen and Amy (Kevin) Knudtson of Onalaska, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Laura (Brian) Stasewich, Joseph (Melinda) Grant, Brandon (Anna) Hauser, Lance “The Lumber Jack” Hauser, Grant Hauser, Jeremy Bolton, Kelsey Bolton, Emma Grant, Meghann Knudtson and Kody Knudtson; five great-grandchildren, Elianna, Sum-mer, Jada, Zavier, Danielle and Lauren; four sisters, Phyllis (Gene) Lang, Helen Ebertowski, Betty (Cliff) Kanz and Joan (Sam) Sasser; four brothers, Edwin Grant, Fred (Lorraine) Grant, Bill (Judy) Grant and Bob (Bonnie) Grant; and his Donut Buddies, Rich Moen and Ron Hall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Onalaska Church of Christ, 1415 Well St., Onakaska, Wis. The Rev. Gordon Clary will officiate. Friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, from 5 to 7 p.m. today and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Harriet R. Aspenson

WESTBY, Wis. — Harriet R. Aspenson, 72, of Westby, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

She was born April 17, 1936, the daughter of Henry and Ella (Knutson) Call. On May 12, 1956, she was united in marriage to Wayne Aspenson in Viroqua, Wis. Harriet was a member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, WELCA and the Quilters.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Lori (Brian Conrad) Erickson of Westby, Linda (Jeff) Bergstrom of Cumberland, Wis., Jon (Marla) Aspenson of Grafton, Wis., and Beth (Mike) Brendel of Viroqua, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Nicole (Adam) Grant, Emily Erickson, Hannah and Beau Bergstrom, Ella, Grace, Alec and Claire Aspenson, and Jennifer, Lauren and Erika Brendel; one great-granddaughter, Arissa Grant; one sister, Carol (Richard) Westpfahl of Holmen, Wis.; one sister-in-law, Diane Call; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Tim Erickson; and two brothers, Gordon and David Call.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier will officiate, with burial in Coon Prairie Cemetery. Genesee A. (Reschke) Balfany

SUN CITY, Ariz. — Genesee A. (Reschke) Balfany, 87, of Sun City passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, with family at her side at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City.

She was born June 2, 1921, in Black River Falls, Wis., the daughter of Herman and Edna (Halverson) Reschke.

Genesee married Orin Lester, who passed away while serving in the military in 1944.

She married Francis Balfany on Jan. 14, 1945, in Iowa.

Genesee and her husband, Francis, lived in Beloit, Wis., for 25 years, where she was a teacher and retired as a principal at Royce Elementary School. She had a passion and love for her school and the students. She retired in 1986, and she and Francis moved to Sun City to pursue her love for the golf course and sunny skies.

Genesee was an active member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church of Sun City and was involved with many activities in the community. She loved spending time with her friends while golfing, playing cards or doing crafts.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Amy Lynn Balfany, Rebecca Seefeldt and Miguel Garcia of Phoenix, Amanda (Seefeldt) and Rick Howe of Enfield, Conn., and Genesee (Seefeldt) and Jon Schaufus of Fitchburg, Mass., and five very special-to-her- heart great-grandchildren, Julian and Aidan Garcia, Parker and Cole Schaufus and Colin Howe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Balfany; her son, Jim Balfany; her daughter, Judy Balfany McDowell; granddaughter, Baby McDowel; her dear daughter-in-law, Janice Balfany Seefeldt; and a brother, Donald Reschke. Genesee will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services were held in Sun City on July 10 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Beloit, Wis.

Patricia L. Jorstad

WILD ROSE, Wis. — Patricia L. Jorstad, 82, of Wild Rose passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in Burlington, Wis.

She was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Onalaksa, Wis., to Plymouth and Marjorie (nee Mackey) Fjelstad. She spent her early life in Onalaksa. Patricia graduated from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with an education degree.

On June 19, 1948, in Onalaska, Patricia was united in marriage to Kenneth A. Jorstad. After marriage, they resided in Oshkosh, Wis., Libertyville, Ill., and then Wild Rose. Kenneth preceded her in death in April 2005. Patricia spent the past year and a half in Burlington.

Patricia was a third-grade teacher, the second generation of four generations of teachers. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wild Rose and the Waushara Country Club. Patricia loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling around the world, camping, golfing and spending time at her lake home with her family.

Survivors include her sons, Gary (Cheri) Jorstad of Burlington, Bob (Cammy) Jorstad of Carmel, Ind., and Dean (Julie) Jorstad of Milwaukee; and by grandchildren, Kara (Tom) Klaves of Burlington and Brye Jorstad of Burlington. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, John Fjelstad.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 25, at 3 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Wild Rose. Inurnment will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in Onalaska City Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the church on Friday from 2 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the research of cancer have been suggested.

HOLMEN/ETTRICK, Wis. — Gordon H. Bahnub, 88, of Holmen and formerly of Ettrick died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home. Services are scheduled for Aug. 9 in Ettrick. A complete obituary will follow. Fossum Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

BELOIT/LA CROSSE, Wis. — Robert E. Hanson, 83, of Beloit and formerly of La Crosse died Monday, July 21, 2008, in Beloit. Arrangements will be an-nounced by Dickinson Family Funeral Homes of La Crosse.

Kellie Jean Quirk Ritter

TREMPEALEAU, Wis. — Kellie Jean Quirk Ritter (nee Whitish), 32, of Trempea-leau passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

She was born Sept. 20, 1975, in Hartford, Wis. She married her best friend, Travis W. Ritter, and the couple made their home in Trempealeau.

Kellie was employed at Ashley Furniture in Arcadia, Wis., as a human resources director. Outside of work, her love and compassion for animals was known to all. Kellie’s cat, Nala, was especially dear to her. Kellie was very proud of her Celtic heritage. With her generous gift of life, she became an organ donor.

Kellie is survived by her husband, Travis of Trempealeau; parents, Duane and Jean (Goodenough) Whitish of Iron Ridge, Wis.; a sister, Karmen (Kevin) Bishop of Ettrick, Wis.; three brothers, Marc Reynolds of Hartford, Wis.; Jon (Laura) Reynolds of Wakefield, Kan., and Jayson Reynolds of Hartland, Wis.; nieces and nephews, Danielle (Cory) Komperud of Ettrick, Brittany Bishop of Ettrick, Brandon Reynolds of Hartland, Andrew and Mirisa Reynolds of Wakefield, and Ben and Brandon Guenther of Ettrick; her in-laws, Jim and Judy Ritter of Trempealeau; two brothers-in-law, Randy (Mary) Ritter and Kevin (Lynette) Ritter; two sisters-in-law, Lori (Fred) Bork and Tracey (Steve) Quarve; a special friend, Jim Dotta; and many, many family and friends.

Kellie was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Leonard and Helen Good-enough; paternal grandparents, Percey and Genevive Whitish; and a brother, Joey Reynolds.

A Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Trempealeau, with Father Arul Joseph officiating. Burial will be a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery in Trempealeau. Friends may call at Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville (Wis.) Chapel, from 5 to 8 p.m. today and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Kellie’s bright and sunny personality will be missed by all.

Laura Margaret Suhr

CASHTON, Wis. — Laura Margaret Suhr, 97, of Cashton passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta, Wis.

Laura was born in the town of Jefferson, near Cashton, on June 17, 1911, to Joseph and Mary (Dunwald) Suhr. He worked in Sparta at St. Mary’s Hospital as a dietician for many years.

Laura is survived by her nieces and nephews, Norbert (Celesta) Leis of Wilton, Wis., Mary Ann (Bill) Parr of Fond du Lac, Wis., Imelda Biermeier of Eau Claire, Wis., David (Karen) Leis of Wilton, Roger (fianceé Patty) Suhr of Sparta, Jim (Jeanice) Suhr of Sparta, Carolyn (Tom) Hemmersbach of Sparta, and Rick Suhr of Mauston, Wis.; along with many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Vernon Suhr; sisters, Irene Suhr and Esther Leis; and one great-nephew, Joe Suhr.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton. Father K. Amaladoss will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hollow Cemetery outside of Cashton. Family and friends are invited for visitation Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton. Visitation on Saturday will be at the funeral home from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Kenneth F. Kafer

WINONA, Minn. — Kenneth F. Kafer, 92, died peacefully early Saturday morning July 19, 2008, at his residence in Callista Court.

Ken was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Little-port, Iowa, to Frederick and Florence (Carpenter) Kafer. He graduated from Rapid City High School, Rapid City, S.D., in 1932, and then worked at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse for five years. He married Vera Abts on June 13, 1942, at Fort Devens, Mass. Five days later, Ken was deployed overseas, where he served for four years — three of which were spent in the European Theater with the Second Evacuation Hospital.

Ken owned and operated a shoe store and repair for several years, as well as a grocery hardware store. In 1949, he was employed in the Fountain City (Wis.) Post Office as a clerk. He transferred to a rural carrier position in 1957, where he worked until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fountain City, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Lions Club and the American Legion. For several years, he served as Fountain City’s assessor. Ken was elected to the Fountain City School Board for 21 years; seven years as treasurer and 12 years as president of the board.

Ken is survived by his wife, Vera and seven children, Rosemary (Earl) Binkley, Joe (Cathy), Jerry (Nikki), John, Kathy (Jim) Ritscher, Mary and Jim (Chris); 10 grandchildren, Heather, Kara, Sean, Rachel, Adam, Chris, Corey, Ben, Jacob and Michael; and nine great-grandchildren, Nora, Najee, Noell, Cheyenne, River, Stephanie, Jamie, Owen and Kendra. Three sisters, Dorothy, Ruth and Rose; and sister-in-law, Jan Kafer also survive him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Visitation will be today, July 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Cath-olic Church in Fountain City, followed with a wake service at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, July 23, at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fountain City, with veterans burial rites provided by American Legion Post 56 of Cochrane-Fountain City, Wis. Casketbearers will be Ken’s grandsons and great-grandson.

Edward ‘Mouse’ Kletzke

BROWNSVILLE, Minn. — Edward “Mouse” Kletzke, 77, of Brownsville died Monday, July 21, 2008, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brownsville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Breza Hall, next to the church, and 1 p.m. to services Thursday at the church. A full obituary will follow in Wednesday’s Tribune. McCormick Funeral Home in Caledonia, Minn., is assisting the family.
