Joe Orso: Who gets to interpret Scripture?

.
Not long after the creation of the universe, God asked the first two humans a question.

As the Genesis story goes, Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, then hearing God’s approach and feeling shame, hide their bodies in the bushes.
Standing there, covered by vegetation, they hear the first question emerge from the mouth of their Creator: Where are you?

As a teacher recently explained, God was not asking them a question about the location of their bodies, which God certainly knew, but about the state of their beings.

After I heard this teaching, I joked with a friend, “Wow, I never knew God could be so deep.”

I meant the biblical God.

Scripture is made to transform us, but so often the stories seem dead to me.

I don’t know if it’s my own lack of insight or a more general lack of insight in Western religious traditions, but when I hear Bible stories, I usually hear those tiresome old interpretations:

- Why did Jesus walk on water or change water to wine? Simply to prove to the world that he is God.

- What is the parable of the prodigal son about? God loves us, even when we mess up.

- And why, after all, did Adam and Eve feel shame after eating that apple? Well, they disobeyed God, of course.

I’m not saying any of these interpretations are wholly wrong, but I think they miss the depth of what Scripture can offer. They come off as logical teachings, presenting lessons like Aesop’s Fables, when I imagine their intention is to transform us.

Let me switch gears for a second.

I am reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. A friend deeply committed to her Christian faith is reading the book, too. For more than a month now, we’ve been sharing our wonder at how the book has helped us enter our prayer more deeply and to hold onto that prayer, at least a little, as we walk through our days.

In the book, Tolle observes the tendency of people to be trapped by their thought-patterns.

“It wasn’t through the mind, through thinking, that the miracle that is life on earth or your body was created and is being sustained,” he writes. “There is clearly an intelligence at work that is far greater than the mind.”

He then offers clear, though challenging, practices about how to encounter this deeper intelligence.

And as I read Tolle’s words, I actually feel differently, and realize that this should always be the effect of reading Scripture, too.

I know Tolle can sound too Eastern to some, or too far removed from Western religion, but he isn’t. Over and over in the book, he returns to the Bible, especially to the teachings of Jesus, to underline his points.

In his teaching about shifting from your mind to your body, for instance, Tolle talks about forgiveness.

“Forgiveness is to offer no resistance to life — to allow life to live through you,” he writes. “The mind cannot forgive. Only you can. You become present, you enter your body, you feel the vibrant peace and stillness that emanate from Being. That is why Jesus said: ‘Before you enter the temple, forgive.’”

But maybe I’m off here. And maybe Tolle is just one more person putting his own spin on Scripture. And maybe Jesus was really just saying, before you go to the altar, reconcile with your brother.

Only each of us as individuals can answer whether our interpretations come from within us, or are blind acceptance of another’s teaching.

As Rabbi Saul Prombaum, of Congregation Sons of Abraham in La Crosse, said in a conversation this week about religious authority and Scripture, “We were told that the Bible is off limits, taboo. Leave it alone. It will only get you in trouble if you try to negotiate it on your own. We will tell you how to read it and what to get out of it. And that’s how you kill a book — when you tell someone that they’re not welcome to offer an interpretation.”

" History is written by many people - not just by those in Power. Fortunately for us, in contemporary Western culture, nearly everyone gets to have a voice in the writing of history. Historical traditions and religious scriptures are both manipulated by people who desire to be in Power. Those people always claim to have some special (or even supernatural) ability or right to interpret their cultures' traditions and histories. They always (try to) set themselves above others, usually by calling themselves "nobles" or "priests". What is most disturbing is how they claim to have some intimate connection with some supernatural being, when they can offer no proof whatsoever of that connection. This behavior leads others to suspect that they are just fooling themselves...and trying to fool everyone else. "

" A short biography of these great leaders. Peter was not the 1st pope. 1st Pope did not come into existance for centuries. Benedict V was killed by his lovers husband with 100 dagger wounds and dragged through the streets and thrown into a cesspool.Benedict VII died during the act of adultry. Benedict XIII was one of 3 popes at the same time and was declared a heretic and Schismatic. BenedictXIV decided that any child babtized in any manner must must live as a Christian or face the terrible punishement of heretics. Too name a few "

" This can be shown to be happening in our lifetimes also. How many words have had different meanings from the 30's through present? Anyone who studies language will tell you that unless you are willing to put the words into their historical content the outcome is garbage. Yet by studying these writings one can pick up subtle things that give one some understanding of what was originally the intent. I just read recently that "History is not what happened but what the winner and those in power wrote". "

" Well perhaps I was not real clear in my meaning of throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
What I'm trying to say is that there were stories, events, thoughts etc written down from word of mouth, thats not new, that is how it works. Their was nothing divine in any of this it was just the belifs of the time. What we cannot know is what the original writings actually said in the context of the time in which they were written. The translations may and most likely are so far removed from the original as to make them worthless. "

" "Throw out the baby with the bathwater"??? Once one starts tossing out the bathwater a scoop at a time(biblical nonsense, wrong science, wrong history, contradictions, immorality, etc), it becomes apparent that there there is no baby. There never was a baby. If the bible were devinely inspired and was meant to convey some meaning to us, it wouldn't have been written in a dead language, contain so many errors, and be full of so much garbage (who begot whom, endorsements of slavery, etc). " Beware especially those who 'claim' an intimate relationship with 'God' or for that matter 'the Holy Spirit'; they WILL (imagine that!) discover 'interpretations' for the Bible that EXACTLY suit their social and political purposes! Wow -- what a surprise eh... "

Senior Advocate wrote on Jul 28, 2008 11:39 AM:

" Anytime someone or organization insists that you must follow their interpretation because only they have it right, it's time to run the other way as fast as you can. Having said that, it does not mean you throw out all of it (the baby with the bath water so to speak) it means you need to do your own analysis and work to see what the meaning may or may not be. You need to read the interpretaions of many opposing views and throw in your own assessment as well. "

Eddie wrote on Jul 27, 2008 10:39 PM:

" And, of course, only select people are filled with the Holy Spirit, so they and they alone possess the correct interpretation of Scripture. The mental gymnastics some people use are truly amazing.... "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 27, 2008 8:58 PM:

" The Holy Spirit interprets scripture. That's why those who accept Jesus as savior are given the Holy Spirit as a guide.

Act 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

John 14:26 "But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

1Cor 2:13 "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." "

Michael Welch wrote on Jul 27, 2008 3:41 PM:

" EVERYONE 'interprets' the Bible (or has someone else do it for him); the misconception that it may be read 'literally' is the REAL 'root of all [Christian] evil.' Other religions do I think a better job of offering more salient and sophisticated interpretation than many Christians though there are EXCELLENT scholars that most have never heard of and their priests and pastors never read, much less discuss in sermons. The sad attitude toward a truly religious person, such as Joe Orso is, is that his sort of seeker is not 'following the (rigid) rules' when he is really making an old faith 'fresh' and 'living,' as they say. ALL religions have 'something' interesting and worthy of attention; Joe pays attention... "

" Good one, resident! It's good that you point out how historical research is always evolving, that what we know is always changed by the discovery of new evidence. History is revised almost constantly. If it weren't, then it wouldn't be History; it would be Dogma. "

Only if you are an historical revisionist. "

Eddie wrote on Jul 26, 2008 8:19 PM:

" Aren't ALL religions nothing but repackaged and resold myths, philosophies, and beliefs? "

County resident wrote on Jul 26, 2008 12:30 PM:

" Tolle is a marketing genius. He has stolen from every religious practise and made up a religion of his own and convinced Oprah to sell it for him. It is new age philosophy repackaged for the post modern generation. It is the perfect religion for those raised with uncertainity and cynicism toward absolutes. "
