Published - Saturday, July 26, 2008 Flags lowered today to honor fallen Onalaska officer Flags across Wisconsin will fly at half-staff Saturday in honor of an Onalaska soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Gov. Jim Doyle has ordered flags lowered out of respect for U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nick Dewhirst, who was killed Sunday in action in Khost Province, Afghanistan. Memorial services for Dewhirst will be at 10 a.m. today at First Evangelical Free Church in Onalaska. Burial will be at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Dewhirst was killed when his unit came under attack by small arms fire and a rocket propelled grenade. According to the order, flags are to be lowered to half-staff at sunrise and returned to full staff at sunset.
