Location: The Fairgrounds are on Hwy. 16 in Tomah, Wis.
Hours: Today’s events start at 8 a.m. with sheep judging in Building 17. Norwalk Clovers 4-H members Hailley Steines, 11, and Micaela Koltermann, 12, planned to wash and clip their sheep Friday night so they’d have an easier time today.
Cost: Admission to the fair is free, but parking costs $3 on the fairgrounds and the gravel lot.
Where are the bathrooms? Flush and portable toilets are throughout the grounds.
Weather or Not: Today looks like a gorgeous day for fairgoers with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s.
Don’t Miss It: The cat show. Kids will be showing their favorite felines at 1 p.m. in Building 13. The small pet show follows at 2:30 p.m., so there are plenty of critters for kids to enjoy.
Let’s go for a ride: The carnival is open daily, with $15 all-you-can-ride passes available from noon to 5 p.m. today and Sunday.
Play Peek-a-boo: With Sniffer, Sparky and Charger, a goat trio, who are residing on the grounds this week. They played the childhood game with kids who passed their pen Friday. They are owned by Sam Radke of Wilton, Wis., who is a member of the Hill-N-Valley 4-H. “That’s the way their mother is,” Radke said of Sniffer and Sparky.
Quotable: “They’re easier to catch than cattle,” said Hailley Steins, 11, when she was explaining why she prefers sheep.
Exciting Entertainment: ATV drag races will be today’s grandstand entertainment. Preliminary racing heats start at noon with the finals at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 for ages 8 and older.
Where the Kids Are: Participating in the kids pedal tractor pull at 1 p.m. today on the Midway.
Fun Competition: The llama and alpaca obstacle course. Kids paraded their animals through the course that simulated what they may encounter on a walk. Some went willingly, while others needed some persuasion. Espresso wasn’t interested in most of the challenges but enjoys them at home, owner Jordanna Robinson, 10, of the Star Gazers 4-H said.
Five dollar dinner: At the 4-H Food stand, you can feast on a hot dog and chocolate shake for $5 or have a hamburger and soda at the Tomah Gridiron Club.
Cool Down: With a scoop of ice cream from the Junior Leaders stand. It costs $1.75 for one scoop and $2 for two.
Learn a Little Something: At the Antique Tractor Show, sponsored by the Norwalk
Lions and Scheiers Deeres. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Spotted, by the numbers: Farm babies at the Small Animal Learning Center — pygmy goats, two; English lop rabbits, six; bulldog puppies, two; 6-week-old kittens, four.
llamas and alpacas: “They usually don’t spit at you unless you take away their food,” said Abigail Stowell, 9, of Sparta, Wis., who was showing borrowed alpacas and llamas at the fair with West Beaver Creek 4-H. “They also like to kiss you.”
