Published - Saturday, July 26, 2008 Shelby fire department receives grant The Shelby Fire Department has received a federal grant to purchase a unit to re-fill firefighter air tanks. The department has been awarded a $28,500 grant from the 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold announced Friday. Wayne Atchley, Shelby’s assistant fire chief, said the grant will save the department money. “Right now we rent and lease out air bottles and this will allow us to re-fill our own bottles,” Atchley said. The grant is provided is provided by the United States Fire Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness.
