Angela Maria DeGiulio Barkey
Angela Maria DeGiulio Barkey died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Methodist Hospital Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was born on Feb. 11, 1939, at her home in the Italian section of Detroit to Frank and Rosa (LaTorre) DeGiulio.

After high school, Angie worked at Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse, Mich., where she met her husband-to-be, David. They married on Sept. 9, 1961. They moved to La Crosse in 1972, where she worked in the Computer Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. They moved to Florida in 1988, where they lived in St. Petersburg and Plant City. She retired from the University of Tampa Library System in 1999.

Angie graduated from Winona State University in Winona, Minn., in an effort to ensure that both of her children observed the discipline and dedication necessary to complete their educations. She loved to travel to Europe and always found time to include side trips to visit relatives in Carbonara di Bari, Italy, where her family originally hailed. She was an avid gardener and cook and even made attempts to learn to sew in her later years. She was actively involved in fundraising programs for youth sports in La Crosse and was an avid supporter of Central High School sports and music programs.

Angie had a special place in her heart for children who lost parents at a young age (her own mother died when she was only 11 years old). On many occasions, her Thanksgiving table would include college students from countries around the world so that they would not feel lonely during American holidays. Above all, she loved being with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Angie was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, David, of Stewartville, Minn., and Plant City, Fla.; daughter, Gina (Mike Kazmerski), of Woodbury, Minn.; son, Dean (Lenae) Barkey, of Rochester; brother, Angelo (Joie) DeGiulio of Allen Park Mich.; grandchildren, Kallyn and Ryan Barkey and Ben and Lindsay Kazmerski; and many friends and extended family.

Her cremains will be buried in Riverview, Mich., in a private ceremony at a later date. For those wishing to do so, memorials preferred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (specify Leukemia patients), 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to Shelby (Township) Youth Baseball care of Shelby Town Hall, 2800 Ward Ave., La Crosse, WI 54601, where Angie and David were involved in the program’s founding in the early 1970s.
