Woman accused of letting baby die mistakenly let out of jail for 20 minutes

.
A La Crosse woman accused of letting her newborn daughter die was erroneously let out of jail for about 20 minutes Tuesday as county officials tried to navigate a rare bond release procedure.

Indra Book, 19, who faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in the Aug. 17, 2007, death of the infant, is in the La Crosse County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.
La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne is considering allowing Book’s release on $10,000 cash and a $40,000 property bond, the first time a property bond would be accepted in La Crosse County.

Family friend George Keith Brown has offered his La Crosse apartment building as collateral. Horne ordered an appraisal to determine if Brown’s building has $40,000 in equity — the market value of the property, minus the outstanding mortgage balance.

When the appraisal listed the property’s value at $475,000, La Crosse County Deputy Corporation Counsel David Lange approved the property bond paperwork Tuesday. That figure, however, did not reflect Brown’s equity in the building.

Jail staff then released Book at 2:23 p.m., after her mother posted the $10,000 cash, said Capt. Doris Daggett, jail administrator.

“We haven’t done this before, and I think there was some miscommunication,” Lange said.

But at Book’s 2:45 p.m. bond hearing Tuesday, Horne denied her release because he didn’t find sufficient property equity. He called for a more detailed appraisal, at the Book family’s expense, and set another review hearing for Tuesday.

Book was ordered back to jail, a move she did not expect, said public defender Vincent Rust. “It was very hard for her,” he said.

Book, of 506 Farnam St., Apt. 1, is accused of failing to provide proper care, including feedings, to her daughter in the hours after giving birth in her then-apartment at 813 S. Sixth St., prosecutors said. She hid the body in a cooler that months later was put out with the trash, according to the criminal complaint.

Rust has filed a motion to dismiss the first-degree intentional homicide charge against Book that will be heard Sept. 5, saying he believes the case facts don’t support the charge.

" And what about hiding the cooler? She hid the cooler in the weeds so no one would find out - that's planned. Yeah, maybe she was in denial, but she still planned to do nothing. When her attempts at abortion failed, she planned on ignoring the pregnancy and the fact that she was going to have to care for the baby. I totally understand desperation. But when most people are desperate, they don't kill someone. The ones that do - are murderers. "

" quay: it's too bad you're sticking up for her, especially as a parent. I have a daughter (unplanned, at a young age), I definitely know depression and denial as well. I have been numb. I've wished my problems gone. She knew what she was doing. If you're numb and in denial, how do you call for an abortion? How do you call adoption agencies (if, in fact she did)? How do you conveniently have a cooler around, but no formula? "

Just curious Mack, are you dating rickey? "

" exactly twilite, she didn't call anybody.
and you can say she stuffed her poor baby into a cooler, or you could say she placed her problem away where she wouldn't need to deal with it. I have kids, I don't know how she could do this but I do know depression, I do know denial, you don't deal with problems, you wish them gone. You are not "jolted" into reality, you are numb. She was numb. "

" how about dropping the war and abortion discussions because book isnt even using them to defend herself. the fact is you can get rid of your baby several LEGAL ways in this country and if she really didnt want it, she shouldnt have given up and just let the baby die. she COULD have have an abortion, she COULD have found someone to adopt it, and she COULD have gone to social services, she COULD have had someone or herself take the baby to a firestation, but she just did nothing.
even if she had looked into some legal options but hadnt had things worked out by the time the baby was born, there is no reason why the baby had to die. she could have gone to the wic office and gotten a bottle and formula and milk for herself, and let them know she didnt want the baby. "

Twilite wrote on Aug 7, 2008 2:27 PM:

" normal people would plan to go to the store to get a bottle if the baby wouldn't nurse, plan to take the baby somewhere - anywhere, plan to call 911, anything to save the baby. But this chick is not normal. She planned to do nothing, to give the baby no care, to kill her. She sure did a great job PLANNING when she stuffed the poor baby in the cooler and HID it. "

Twilite wrote on Aug 7, 2008 2:27 PM:

" Quay: if she was in such denial, maybe she shouldn't have called adoption agencies. oh wait, who actually believes she called just to be turned away? laughable. and how exactly was she in denial when she SAW the baby in front of her dying? or, when she was in labor? those are two good ways to get you snapped back to reality. that's when you do something...like PLAN. "

" inkycat: if she would have gone to the clinic for prenatal care, she would have received help. they've got social workers, programs for pregnant adolescent girls, and doctors. and don't give that crap about not having insurance. she would have been eligible for medicaid (which, the social workers will help apply for). or, she she could have asked for help. she just knew she didn't want a baby so tried to ignore it until it was too late and ended up murdering her. did you expect someone to just know that she needed help and we were supposed to go knock on her door? she was an adult, she knew exactly what she was doing. " Tough crowd. I think this girl was in a deep denial as I said before. She didn't plan to kill her baby, she didn't plan anything. She wanted this problem to go away. She ignored her problem. If people are in debt and going to lose their house, some ignore the problem. If you are sick and think you are dying, some ignore the problem. Millions of people are in denial about millions of things. Yes, she killed a baby, yes she should be punished. But It sounds like some here would like to throw her in a dark pit and ignore her till she goes away. Is that any better than what she did? Aren't we suppose to be better? "

" Hey Mack,
Why the stab at Christians? Nobody said that they were Christians. Murder is wrong - period. It had nothing to do with Christianity. This woman committed a crime against another human being. She should be held responsible for that. So, why rail on the Christians? Your comment was extremely derogatory and biased. Get a life. "

" peachtree,
really abortion? Is that where it's going to turn to? Women need to have the rights to their bodies. If abortion is illegal you are going to have 10X more of these stories. "

" Mack,
if you would get your head out of your rear end for one moment to understand that it's not about one baby dying in lacrosse vs. babies dying in Iraq. Brighten up, use the round thing attached to the long straight thing by your sholders. It's about a baby, innocent not given a chance at life. Something that is or was in the control of a person. She could have turned that baby in to the hospital and it would have lived. If you had the chance to rescue all the children in Iraq and you didn't I would respond to you in the same way "

PEACHTREE wrote on Aug 7, 2008 7:39 AM:

" I for one do not condone the war and I also don't condone killing innocent babies/children. Bush said he was going to stop abortion...not only has abortion not stopped , we are also killing more people/children by having a war.Why are people feeling sorry for her? "
