Arland Krogan
STODDARD, Wis. — Arland Krogan, 67, of Stoddard died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sime Funeral Home, Readstown, Wis. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery, Folsom, Wis. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Vivian A. Reed

BOSCOBEL, Wis. — Vivian A. Reed, 92, of Boscobel died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Orchard Manor, Lancaster, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Kendall Funeral Home, Boscobel. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery, Mount Zion, Wis. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.

Eldon F. ‘Elf’ Miller

Eldon F. “Elf” Miller, 76, of French Island, La Crosse passed away at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. Private graveside services will be at French Island cemetery. A complete obituary will follow. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family.

Edmund C. Strahl

Edmund C. Strahl, 92, of La Crosse went to his eternal home Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008.

He was born July 12, 1916, in North Clayton, Wis., to Dewitt and Agnes (Kissack) Strahl. Ed married Bernadine Abbs on Sept. 4, 1951. They resided in Baraboo, Wis., where he worked at Badger Ordnance Works for several years. They then moved to La Crosse, and he worked for Skelgas until he retired. At that time they moved to West Salem, Wis. Ed and Bernadine enjoyed traveling together. He was a 40-year member of the Eagles Club and a 50-year member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Lois (Robert C.) Olson. Ed became a grandpa in his heart to Tracy Olson, Todd Molzahn and Steve Olson. He will also always be a grandpa to Jacob, Luke and Zack Molzahn. He is further survived by a special niece, Beverly Felton Swiggum and her children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernadine in March 2001; and a sister and a brother-in-law, Bernice and Archie Infield.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, at SchumachernKish Funeral Home of La Crosse. The Rev. Doris Simpson will officiate. Entombment will be in Garden of Peace Mausoleum, Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Ruth Paula Silberschmidt

STOUGHTON, Wis. — Ruth Paula Silberschmidt, 80, of Stoughton died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008.

She was born on March 26, 1928, in Sparta, Wis., to Pastor Martin Zimmermann and Paula (Radloff) Zimmermann. Ruth was baptized, confirmed and married in Burr Oak Lutheran Church by her father. She was married to Robert Silberschmidt on May 28, 1949. They owned and operated Silbie’s Shoes in the Village Shopping Center, La Crosse, for 33 years. Robert preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1992.

Ruth is survived by two daughters, Christine Wood of Fort Worth, Texas, and Teresa (Tom) Truppe of Janesville, Wis.; a son, Kurt (Mary) Silberschmidt of Stoughton; 11 grandchildren, Rebecca Williams, Gregory Mewaldt, Rachel Mewaldt, Amanda Truppe, Daniel Truppe, Stephen Truppe, Amy Silberschmidt, Joseph Silberschmidt, Aaron Oberman, Nathan Oberman and Shauna Parkhurst; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Harlen) Demsien of Two Rivers, Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Trudy Zimmermann of Aiken, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John and Paul; and a sister-in-law, Grace.

Funeral services will be held at Good Shepherd by the Lake Lutheran Church, 1860 U.S. Hwy. 51, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, with the Rev. Todd McVey presiding. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11. Visitation will be held at Gunderson Stoughton Funeral Home, Hwy. 51 N. at Jackson St., Stoughton, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Memorials may be made to either Good Shepherd by the Lake Lutheran Church or Skaalen Nursing Home.

Dorothy A. Mercier

Dorothy A. Mercier, 79, of La Crosse died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Lakeview Health Center, West Salem, Wis.

She was born March 26, 1929, in La Crosse. Dorothy received her LPN degree and was employed at Grandview Hospital and later for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, both in La Crosse for many years.

Dorothy is survived by several cousins and her co-worker and friend, Vivian (Ronald) Robertson of Bangor, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents and her long-time friend, Margaret “Peg” Hanson.

In accordance with Dorothy’s wishes, no services are planned. Private burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery.

Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse, is in charge of the arrangements.

TREMPEALEAU, Wis. — Marian Helleland, 87, of Trempealeau died in her home Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Trempealeau. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Centerville, Wis. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday, both visitations at the church. Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel, is assisting the family.
