Work on Bliss Road to begin today

.
A year after major flooding ripped through the region destroying homes, streets and bridges, La Crosse’s Bliss Road is under construction.

About $2.05 million in stabilization and resurfacing work on the road to Grandad Bluff begins today.
“The initial work will include removing guard rails and cutting down brush and trees in all areas where repairs are to be made,” Tony Hutchens, assistant director of La Crosse Public Works, said in a release.

Construction is expected to last through mid-November.

Hutchens noted that the construction and removal of guardrails along the road’s steep slopes will make the road unsafe for all users.

“Portions of the existing pavement will be removed, leaving deep holes with no through access,” he said.

Bliss Road was closed to vehicles in late June 2007 and again in July after portions of the road were undercut by erosion and water.

It further deteriorated under heavy rains in late August 2007.

The city council voted in February to mend the crumbling road for about $1.8 million. Public works officials anticipated state and federal aid would account for all but $583,000.

In early July the county agreed to eat an additional $50,000 to $70,000 in repair costs when bids came in $250,000 over budget, and with contingencies, the shortfall neared a half-million dollars, Hutchens said.

" Willie, it is perfectly safe to walk on and bike on. aside from the edge where its washed out, its no worse than west ave was before they repaved it. "

" laxme, after looking at the satellite imagery of Bliss Rd on weather.com, I would question the safety of all traffic including pedestrian traffic, especially on the worst wash. I have a friend who biked past it and said he will never take that route again! "

" I think the mayor should be reading this blog for a sounding board. We have better ideas than anyone in office. WE want less government and lower taxes mayor. "

" Hey Willie, I called the city PD before I started walking and they said it was perfectly legal. "

" Unless they move the road (hopefully to Wedgewood Valley) it will definitely wash again. There just isn't enough hill left to build a road on and it's straight downhill for hundreds of feet. "

" Shouldn't have been anyone using the road, it was a hazard to all traffic. I hope they start issuing trespass notices and start citing. "

" I enjoyed Bliss road as a walking trail for almost a year.Going to miss that, even though it was being overtaken by irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs run unleashed and crap all over the road. But when it washes out again-I'll be back.

Jackson, are you T.M.? born to RM and JM? "

" Time to make Bliss a toll road. Bliss is easily the most expensive road in the county. "

" Maybe this is why the city is spending a million dollars to get its own ambulance, just so they can have it on hand to rescue the motorists after bliss road caves in again. "

" "Mark" my words this will turn into a 10 million dollar project! Bliss Road is falling down you poor taxpayers. "
