Book released from jail

.
A La Crosse woman accused of letting her newborn daughter die was released from jail today after a family friend used his apartment building as collateral to cover the bond.

Indra Book, 19, who faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in the Aug. 17, 2007 death of the infant, was being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne allowed Book's release on $10,000 cash and a $40,000 property bond.

This marks the first time a property bond has been accepted in La Crosse County. But, Horne said, the process is regularly used in other counties in the state.

For much of the past week, the court and county corporation counsel have been working through the process and trying to assure that the apartment owner, George Keith Brown, had more than $40,000 in equity in the building.

In court today, Deputy Corporation Counsel David Lange told Horne that a conservative estimate done by an assessor showed there was sufficient equity.

Based on that assessment, Horne allowed Book to be released.

If Book fails to appear for further court hearings or violates conditions of her bail, the bond could be revoked and the county could foreclose on Brown’s property, Horne said in court.

" People aren't excusing her actions, they are asking that posters respect the system, innocent before proven guilty. Some folks calling her a murderer have already ignored her right to a fair trial. I anguish for this little baby, but I will not be ther judge and jury. If any good can come from this I hope more young women will learn about the options they do have so that these types of things don't have to happen again. I pray for everyone involved in this case - inlcuding the judge. "

" What I have a hard time wrapping my mind around is how people can defend her actions and mitigate them as far as they do. This isn't even a case where she was drunk or high and rolled on the baby and suffocated like you hear about. There was nothing accidental about how she handled the pregnancy and birth or how she got rid of the corpse. There is definite malice aforethought. Innocent til proven guilty is one thing, downgrading her act to "oops" is a whole other thing entirely. "

" Twilite-I am not a friend of hers, I have never met her. I just happen to know that situations like this are all too common, and the intelligent thing to do is look at all of the factors involved. She did attempt to feed the infant and failed, this is very common in those attempting to breast feed for the first time. She never stated that she stopped feeding the infant to cause it to die, only that she understood that that would be the consequence if it never ate. Many mothers struggle initially to breast feed their infants. I don't see the evidence that she intentionally killed this child. Why did she stay with the child and attempt to care for it at all if she was intending for it to die? Look at the evidence. This is a terrible tragedy, but let's look at the facts. "

How did the system fail her? Did the state stop doing those darn little monthly period checks to make sure she wasn't pregnant? The system can only fail if it's used in the first place. She failed her baby. "

" It wouldn't have been 28 weeks. It would have been more like 30-34 weeks, since the complaint said she was 5 months along on June 11 or 13 or whatever. Of course the survival rate is better with medical intervention. That's why people have babies in hospitals. She never got any care - which was just another sign of intent. "An 18 year old 100 pound girl labored all day and delivered completely on her own with no assistance." way to make her out to be a saint. This was her own fault. Did the crack make her go into labor early? "

Twilite wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:20 PM:

" And apparently she didn't "find the help she needed" because she never wanted that help in the first place. Was there supposed to be a psychic knocking on her door telling her not to kill her baby? "

Twilite wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:18 PM:

" Yeah, thanks I read that. Still doesn't change the fact that she left the house (with people in it) to go to the garage (with no people in it, even if there was a couch) in case the baby cried. If it was such a "lived in" area, where were those people the next morning and afternoon when the baby killer was all alone with the dying baby? "

turbocharged wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:06 PM:

" nanigrrl7 wrote "this was a scared young mother who did not know what to do and whose child passed on before she found the help she needed.

Are you freakin kidding? She hid the entire pregnancy, gave birth alone, took the baby to a garage/living room (doesn't matter either way) and then left it there to die. She then stuffed it in a cooler for how many months before deciding to put it out with the garbage. Then she just goes about her buisness like nothing happened, and never told anyone. Yeah....sounds like a scared young mother to me! NOT.

You sound like your a friend of her's. If so, Doesn't it make you even a little sick that you talked to her and she never acted like anything was wrong or that she had KILLED an innocent little child. "

pinky wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:02 PM:

" nanigrrl-It's very apparent she was disassociated from her baby, that is proven by her actions. She was SO not connected that she didn't go to a hospital when she was in labor (knowing the baby was premature), not going to a 'safe place' to drop the baby off, not telling ANYONE she was pregnant in the first place. It's like she just ignored everything and wished it would all just *go away*. And it did, until she got caught. Scared, immature women need to understand it's NOT OK to do nothing. That's not an excuse. There are plenty of resources for them, GO GET THEM!! "

quay wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:48 PM:

nanigrrl7 wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:48 PM:

" Pinky- Most mothers who intend to not raise their child (ie: place it for adoption) disassociate from that child during their pregnancy. If you do not understand the family dynamics you are only passing judgment unfairly. We have a law in this country that babies can be dropped off no questions asked within 72 hours of birth because it is so common for young girls to hide their pregnancies. I think that this was a scared young mother who did not know what to do and whose child passed on before she found the help she needed. "

nanigrrl7 wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:42 PM:

" Twilite- did you not read the end of my comment? The garage had been converted into a living room. She essentially took the baby into a living room, not a garage. And 28 week baby's have that high of a survival rate with immediate medical intervention, which I am certain that you are aware of. An 18 year old 100 pound girl labored all day and delivered completely on her own with no assistance. I am willing to bet that she wasn't thinking very clearly. Most mothers who kill their children do just that, not staying with the child and calling adoption agencies. This is a case of the system failing this mother and her child. "

pinky wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:41 PM:

" So nanigrrl7-If you know she had friends/ family there for her but she just chose not to turn to them for help, that justifies my first thought upon hearing this sick story that she never intended to care for, love, raise, or otherwise, this baby. *Lucky* for her, the baby was premature and died quickly. "

twilite wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:38 PM:

" nanigirl - did you read it? "She indicated that she gave birth sometime in the middle of the night and went out to the garage at approximately 2:00 in the morning with the baby" who's in the garage lounging at 2 am? if she wasn't worried about people hearing the baby, why didn't she stay in the house? I have worked with preemie babies a lot, and a baby at 7 or 7.5 months, like this one - has a survival rate of 94-98%. The baby died so quickly because it was delivered by a mother in a bathtub, didn't have her cord clamped, and wasn't taken care of. "

" The saddest part of this entire story is that all of the information that has come out has been completely biased and one sided. Ms. Book should face punishment for what she did, no doubt. However, did anyone read the entire complaint against her? This pregnancy was apparently about 7 months gestation. This was most likely a premature baby which is most likely why it passed on so quickly. Her friends and family were there for her, but she hid her pregnancy. And as for the "garage", it had been turned into a living room and was a common social area. What happened is terrible, but how many have looked beyond the biased reporting of the Tribune? "

twilite wrote on Aug 8, 2008 2:24 PM:

" And if she's so "ill" then how is she being punished? She lived almost a year with this, hiding it the whole time. If she was living with remorse, she wouldn't have made it a year. You're right, she's ill. For sure. But you seriously think she can "turn her life around?" Have you seen her myspace page? She's been messed up from day one. "

Eye for an eye, someone should starve her to death. "
