Judge: Put Kimmel on the ballot
Voters in Wisconsin’s 91st Assembly District will have six choices in the Sept. 9 Democratic primary.
A judge ruled today that John Kimmel’s name should be on the ballot, noting that his nomination petition “substantially complies” with state law.
The Arcadia mayor’s election papers were disqualified by state elections officials on the July 8 filing deadline because they did not include the date of the election in which he planned to run. Kimmel sued the state last week after the Government Accountability Board failed to overturn the decision.
Kimmel said the decision was “fulfilling” after the frustration he felt in Madison.
Trempealeau County Circuit Judge John Damon issued a two-page order today after hearing arguments Thursday.
That brings to six the number of Democrats running for Barbara Gronemus’s seat. Two Republicans also will compete in the primary. An independent and a Libertarian round out the field of 10.
Gronemus, a Democrat from Whitehall first elected in 1980, announced last year she would retire.
