Clara J. Bauer
LACROSSE/MADISON — Clara J. Bauer, 93, a longtime resident of MeadowWood Assisted Living in La Crosse before moving to the Madison area to be near her daughter, died in the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008.
She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Minnesota to Anthony and Martha (Dittberner) Lentz. Clara enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was a lifelong member of the St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral Parish.
Clara is survived by a daughter, Virginia Chickey of Stoughton, Wis.; six grandchildren, Susan (Steve) Liebherr, Jeffrey Kaas, Diane (Dwayne) Krager, John (Rachel) Clarkin, Erin Clarkin and Jackie Clarkin; four great-grandchildren, Sara, Christa and Corban Liebherr, and Joshua Krager; and a son-in-law, John Clarkin of La Crosse.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jean Clarkin; a grandchild; two sisters, Caroline Lennon and Margaret Kulla; and a brother, Clarence Lentz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be today at 10:30 a.m. in Marian Chapel at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main St., La Crosse. The Rev. Michael Gorman will officiate, and entombment will be in the mausoleum in Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the service.

Kermit Kenneth Verthein
ALTURA, Minn. — Kermit Kenneth Verthein died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at his home in Altura, Minn., after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Tulare, S.D., on Sept. 3, 1924, to Gustav and Elsie (Haar) Verthein. His family later moved to Caledonia, Minn. He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1942, where he played baseball and was captain of the football team. He married Augusta Nunemacher on Oct. 16, 1945, in Brownsville, Minn. Kermit and Augusta farmed in Caledonia and Hokah, Minn., until 1961. They then farmed in Altura until their retirement. While farming, he received the Winona County Conservation Farmer of the Year Award. Kermit and Augusta wintered in Arizona for many years. Kermit was a member of Our Savior Moravian Church of Altura. He previously served on the Altura City Council, Rollingstone (Minn.) Creamery Board and was a former member of the Altura Lions. Kermit loved life. He especially enjoyed his family; the Green Bay Packers; the Minnesota Twins and most sporting events; a good card game; golfing; and he attended many horse pulls with his wife and friends.
Kermit is survived by his wife, Augusta; two sons, Dennis (Carolyn) Verthein and Steven Verthein, both of Altura; and one daughter, Candace (Steven) Kohner of Winona, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Bradley (Heather) Verthein, Brenda (Jon) Parsons, Jay (Amanda) Verthein, Jennifer Verthein, Ben (Greta) Verthein, Kjersti (Mark) Anderson and Kollin Foss; four stepgrandchildren, Shawn (Michelle) Kohner, Stephanie Vaughn, Jason (Jill) Kohner and Jennifer Kohner; and 17 great-grandchildren. Kermit is also survived by sisters, Katie Enyart of Phoenix, Geneva (Dexter) Ridgley of Mesa, Ariz., LuEtta (Chester) Fruechte of Caledonia, Donna (Harold) Amsrud of New Brighton, Minn., and Janice (Donald) Warren of Burnsville, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Kermit was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Clarence, Gustav Jr., Norma Rolfs, Dorothy Bunge, Lillian Wiedman and an infant brother.
Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Moravian Church or Seasons Hospice.
There will be a celebration of Kermit’s life at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Our Savior Moravian Church, Altura, with the Rev. David Sobek officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Moravian Cemetary. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Our Savior Moravian Church and one hour before the service.

Clifford Winchel
ROCKFORD, Ill. — Clifford Winchel, 60, of Rockford passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, in P.A. Peterson Center for Health, Rockford.
He was born Sept. 6, 1947, in Ontario, Wis., to Dariel and Delphia Arvella (Bugbee) Winchel. He was employed at Chrysler as a spot welder for 30 years. He retired from Chrysler in 2001.
He is survived by sisters, Velma (Joe) Bugbee, Alice (Jim Lowe) Delap, Sherry Tracey, Sharon Scholze, Mary Peter and Cindy (Arlin Filter) Ebert; brothers, David (Kathy Danielson) Winchel and Rainey (Karen) Winchel; sister-in-law, Judy Winchel; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; three brothers; and three brothers-in-law, Russel Scholze, Dave Tracey and Wayne Peter.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Rockford. Visitation also will be Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Torkelson Funeral Home, 720 Madison St., Ontario. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Torkelson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forrest Burr Cemetery in Hillsboro, Wis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Northern Illinois Hospice, Diabetes Foundation or Heart Foundation.
