The Dane County Bomb Squad later safely detonated the device at the La Crosse County Landfill, said La Crosse County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeff Wolf.
No one was injured in the incident, which began about 10:20 a.m. when an appraiser doing a market analysis found the grenade in 2541 E. Second Ave., which is owned by Prudential Lovejoy Realty, said Wolf.
Campbell police and sheriff’s investigators quickly cordoned off an area around the home and sent photographs of the device to the Dane County squad in Madison, which arrived in the afternoon to dispose of the grenade, Wolf said.
“It appears to have been a military-type hand grenade and is unknown how long it has been at the residence,” Wolf said.
Officials still are investigating how the grenade ended up in the home, Wolf said.
The homeowners or their insurance carrier will be billed for the expense of dealing with the device, Wolf said.
