Pit bull euthanized this morning

.
A pit bull that escaped from a South Side yard and attacked two CenturyTel technicians was euthanized earlier today.

The dog had been quarantined at the Coulee Region Humane Society since the Aug. 18 attacks.
The dog, named Big Boy, was surrendered by owner Cathy Bolling.

Officials determined the 2-year-old black and white dog jumped the thin wire fence behind 815 S. Seventh St. about 9:15 a.m. Aug. 18 and made the unprovoked attacks on Dale Proksch and Carmon Jostad while they were working in the alley.

Both Proksch of Holmen and Jostad of Coon Valley were treated for several bite wounds at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center.

" I just want to ask all you pitbull lovers how many of you have been attacked or been bitten by one? How many of you have witnesses one attacking another dog or person? I bet none because if you have and you still love this breed your as demented as their bloodline.
Ive done all the above and again I will say it the only good pitbull is a DEAD one! "

" I work for a nationally known insurance company and we receive reports on dog bite claims. In the first quarter of 2007 Wisconsin had 24 dog bites with over $424,000 paid out in regards to these claims. The report does not state what breed of dogs were involved in the claims, but I know in this office we have had claims involving a Rottweiler and a German Shepard. Makes me think twice when I jog by a house with a big dog barking at the fence! "

" Stubby said it all. A family member raised a pit bull that was beaten and left for dead in a dumpster. This was the gentlest, most loving companion we ever had. It is all about ownership and environment. This dog should have had a second chance, under different conditions. Bet it could have been rehabilitated with the proper influence. What about Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer)??? He has over 70 rehabilitated p.b.'s at his complex. Most of those dogs were in the red zone when he got them. Goes to show what effect environment and ownership has. I am saddened that this was the outcome for this dog. "

" Not sure if a lot of people know this or not...La Crosse does not have a "leash law", either. I was told by our city's finest once that as long as an owner can maintain control over their animal physically, then a leash is not required. Would a leash have helped those two guys? Who knows...but it may save the child riding by on his/her bike on the other side of the street from someone walking their dog. "

" That poor dog!Used to be Rotts were the bad ones, now it's Pitts. It all comes down to the training, owners, how the animals are raised, the type of atmosphere, and how they are kept in their own surroundings ( i.e. high sturdy fence instead of a thin barb wire, underground electric, etc ).I feel for the owners & hope the next time, they research things further. "

" Tanktastic - I get it...

Like you said "ban the pit bull" What dog is next...Rotties...Then ???? When will it stop??? Bad Owners=Bad Dogs

HA,HA quote " well at least you have control over a loaded gun, you can put 'em in a safe etc." What good is a loaded gun in a safe???
Are criminals going to wait for to unlock it??? My dog will protect my home, no gun needed!!!
Also, hes not a pit bull, nor a rottie so I will walk the streets hoping to pass you you
JOKE...I hope you yell something across the street to me just to prove to me your stedfast ignorance!!!

Please yell something at me and my dog!!!
because I may want to beat you down...my dog will show you nothing but love and kindness UNFORTUNATELY!!! "

Tanktastic wrote on Aug 28, 2008 9:25 PM:

" Go ahead and ban the pitbull. It will not take care of the real problem. Uneducated, irresponsible owners. Does anyone else get that. "

" Anti-Pitbull people- The show Animal Witness on Animal Planet is airing the Micheal Vick story again on Aug 31 at 6pm. Watch at least the last 20 min. By the way, of the two dogs that were euthanized in the Vick case, one of them was due to injuries not it's temperament. "

" Dogs are and have been bred for a purpose and their nature is reflected in that breeding. We all know and have seen how the nature of dogs such as beagles and collies are reflected by their breeding. Pit bulls have been breed over the centuries to be aggressive dogs with powerful jaws and a terrible bite. When push comes to shove that nature come to the forefront and the result is disaster for some poor human or another animal. es, they do need training, but their nature still lurks to reflect their breeding. "

" I live in the neighborhood and I can say that I have seen them jump the fence before a few times. It's not safe for them to be running around freely like that.

Even if not provoked, these dogs aren't exactly fed well.

The owners should be held responsible.

I don't blame the dogs for running. I'd run too. "

jblake47, well at least you have control over a loaded gun, you can put 'em in a safe etc.

You are correct though, it is JUST A MATTER OF TIME. They're killers, not cuddlers.

People that defend the breed are just clueless, and have no idea what they're talking about. Wish every owner knew what it was like to have some teeth sunk into you that you cant pull away from. THEN, MAYBE they'd understand. "

" This family has at least 2 more pit bulls in their possession, and at least one of their other dogs have bitten people. This family should have all of their animals taken from them. The number of instances with this one family should help illustrate that irresponsible owners are a huge part of the problem with pit bulls. And it's not just their animals, it is the entire family that is violent and disrespectful to the neighborhood. Children and animals truly are a product of their environment. "

Yeah I watched that show and I was quite taken surpise myself and happy those dogs have given another chance of life and live happy life with new families. I wish they don't put the dogs down today and give them another chance with proper trainings and I also agreed with Stubby. "

" Everyone who has posted comments this last few days how pitbulls are a violent breed please pay attention. Last night on Animal Planet there was a very good show on Michael Vick. It featured the 61 of the 63 dogs that where confiscated from Vick's property. Only two of the dogs taken had to be put to sleep out of 63. One dog featured is a therapy dog in hospitals in the L.A. area. The haters would be quite surprised by this story. I was. "

" It's like having a loaded gun in your house. It's only a matter of time before something bad happens. Maybe if there were a carry law, these men could have protected themselves. Those that carry weapons have a chance to defend themselves. Those that don't suffer the consequences of other people's stupidity. "

they will just get another pit bull and we will be reading the same story over again in a couple of years or so. "

" I wonder if records are keep of how many attacks happen each year in this country by dogs and how many of them are of this breed.
I will bet that in each case the owner was directly responsible. Dogs are not born killers just owned by stupid uncaring people. "

JohnnyHobo wrote on Aug 28, 2008 2:08 PM:

" It's really time for the city council to outlaw Pit Bull and Rottweiler ownership within the corporate limits. These violent breeds need the room afforded by residential lots of 1 acre minimum (if not more.) While Pitt Bull and Rottie owners love their dogs (and often raise trained, well-behaved pets) the city needs to ensure a safe environment for its citizens. "

" Right on the money Stubby. These can be wonderful dogs but do have the instinct to protect their owner. It is truly negligent to have a thin wire fence (that the dog easily jumped) as a safeguard. We're just lucky it wasn't two little kids the dog decided to attack. "

" This is so sad to hear. Owners need to be aware of what breed of dog they own and work with them appropriately. This breed is a wonderful animal if raised properly. You can't really blame the dog for this incident. They are meant to be protectors, and that's what they do. I only hope this owner is charged with something. Euthanizing this breed everytime there is an incident is not the answer. "

D. Ray wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:15 PM:

" It seems even the friendliest of pit bulls can "snap" at any time. I'm not saying get rid of them but their owners MUST be responsible for containing them or they should be penalized. "
