The incident happened on Wausau's northeast side early Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred early Thursday afternoon on Wausau's northeast side after an officer attempted to detain the man and he pulled a knife, Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts said.
The officer shot the man through the arm and the bullet went into his abdomen. Then the man kept going, and the officer used the Taser. Hilts said the man, who was not identified, was undergoing surgery.
A neighbor originally called police to say a man with a knife was outside the house talking to himself, Hilts said.
Thursday's shooting was the first time a city police officer has fired a gun at a person in more than 10 years, Hilts said.
