Hometown History: City baseball teams met for first time in 1938

.
The spring of 1938 saw the first official intracity baseball competition between Aquinas, Central and Logan high schools. This inaugural season ended June 8 and 9 when the Logan and Central squads met for the first two times in their schools’ history.

In the first game, Logan triumphed over Central by a 6-4 score. Central out-hit Logan 8 to 3, but errors and walks cost the Central nine. Bill Richardson was the pitcher for Central, while Ken Knutson took the mound for Logan.
Logan got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first inning, utilizing only one base hit by Eddie Gillmeister. Two Central errors and two walks allowed by Richardson helped Logan tally the four runs. Russ Wolden and Russ Mahlum also starred for Logan in the game. Fred Swertferger, Robert Stuckey and Robert Reichgelt led the way for Central. The game was played at Copeland Park.

In the second game, Logan routed Central, 13-1 in six innings. Gillmeister again led Logan, along with pitcher George McKenzie, who struck out eight and allowed only three hits. Chuck Whiting led Central, going 2 for 2 and scoring Central’s lone run. This game was played at Athletic Field, which was located along Ward Avenue near Diagonal Road.

The sweep allowed Logan to tie Aquinas for the first city championship with records of 3-1. Central finished 0-3. The Central squad was coached by “Babe” Weigent, while Carl Matthusen coached the Logan team.
