City board OKs jail alternative on North Side

.
The La Crosse Board of Public Works today became the first city committee to approve plans for leasing a pair of North Side duplexes to the county as a temporary home for female jail inmates.

The Plan Commission also takes up the lease at a special meeting at 4 p.m. today.
The Highways, Properties and Utilities Committee was scheduled make a recommendation on the lease last week but postponed the vote until 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The city council will follow with votes at its 7:30 p.m. meetings Tuesday and Thursday.

With approval, the county will convert the duplexes at Kane and St. Paul streets into a Justice Sanctions facility for up to 10 inmates for a year.

The temporary site would give the county time to find a permanent location, county officials said.

" It's more class warfare against the North Side: they always dump this sort of thing on the poorer areas of the city. Why didn't Cameron Street get this crap instead? It's easy to answer that one! Remember the sex offender halfway house they dumped next to Jefferson school on the North Side? The safety of poor kids doesn't matter to rich suburbanite officials, at all!

The November elections are about economic class warfare and racial tensions: working-class folks had better wise up to the fact that they are despised, hated and reviled by their arch-enemies in the middle and upper classes! They hate you even more if you are brown and poor--vote accordingly. "

" Swantz is the only Public Works Board member that is elected besides the Mayor. Just thought you should know. The rest of the Board's memebrs are pretty much hired by the Mayors "special Committee'. Now that would be the special committee that Council Richmond attempted by resolution mere weeks ago to take power from and place more back into elected officials hands. But was voted down. Look a little different the more you know and hear? It should. "

" Public Works Board? This group of Department Heads could not even approve the exterior of Riverside II, until after the building was up and finshed. Planning Commission? Becker/Denton, Kirch/S 17th Pl, Italiano/Avon, Satory/Pearl, Turtenwald/State St, Lenard/Main, Seeger/ still checking? The Planning Memeber that has spoken out against this is the Northside Councilman Italiano. what a surprise? The other adjacent very close District Two has been ruled to be left empty until April 2009. Andrea Richmond very close on the other north side District, who has been told it will take over a year to legally form up a 'Neighborhood Organization' and all the things that would go with that, which has been attended informally by hundreds, does not want it either. NOT IN MY BACK YARD? Figure it out! "

" Being that it was widely known by all the committee members how much this idea was not supported by the community. I think that every member should lose their job in the next election. Try voting in people who actually listen to the public before making decisions. If you don't hold these committee members accountable for these actions they will continue to do whatever the good ol' boys want. "
