The inaugural Onalaska DARE golf outing debuts New Year’s Day at the Coulee Golf Bowl in Onalaska. The event aims to raise awareness and support for the DARE program while satisfying the off-season itch of dedicated golfers, said tournament organizer and Onalaska council member Bob Muth.
“I’m a golf nut, and in mid-winter, I start shaking,” he said. “And if you’re a golfer, I dare you to show up.”
Funding for Onalaska’s DARE program took a hit earlier this year when a new state law prohibited judges the option of requiring criminal defendants pay a forfeiture to the program as a sentencing alternative. All proceeds raised from the Jan. 1 golf event will benefit DARE.
Muth, a retired Onalaska police officer, said he has witnessed firsthand the value of a DARE education. About 250 Onalaska fifth-graders go through the program annually.
“I see what DARE does, and it’s such an important program,” he said.
The outing will be a nine-hole four-person best-ball tournament. Teams can tee off every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Muth is hoping to fill all tee times and recommended teams sign up before the Dec. 15 deadline. The fee is $20 per golfer.
Each participant will be issued an orange golf ball and allowed to sweep snow aside before their shots. Golfers are allowed to use a cordless drill to pierce the frozen ground for tees.
Those who haven’t lost their orange ball at the end of the round can enter it into a drawing. The event will feature a silent auction and door prizes, while awards will go to teams who place in the top half of the field.
