The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department is banning tows from ditches and medians if they’re unsafe due to winter weather conditions.
Sheriff’s Capt. John Matz says the ban will mostly affect U.S. Highways 41 and 441/10, but could cover other roads if conditions are bad.
Matz says removing vehicles in bad weather often creates a hazard to drivers, so stuck vehicles will be left until traffic dies down.
The county will use digital billboards along U.S. Highway 41 to let drives know when the ban is in effect. Deputies will pick up drivers and take them to safe places to wait until conditions improve and their vehicles can be towed.
