Police say the fire reported about 7:30 p.m. was limited to an upstairs bedroom, but heavy smoke kept officers from entering the room.
Firefighters from the Shawano Area Fire Department were able to enter and found 47-year-old Todd A. Brossman on a bed. He was later pronounced dead at Shawano Medical Center.
Shawano police say a preliminary investigation shows Brossman may have died of smoke inhalation and careless use of smoking materials may be involved.
Investigators are waiting for autopsy and other test results as their work continues.
