It didn’t matter to Brown, the UW-La Crosse men’s basketball team’s senior point guard, it was smack-dab in the middle of the Eagles’ nonconference game Saturday against Saint Mary’s University. When UW-L coach Ken Koelbl warned Brown at one point in the second half he needed to make a defense adjustment, Brown responded he had the situation under control.
It was the kind of passion Koelbl, himself a former point guard, could appreciate.
UW-L ended up beating the Cardinals 72-61 in front of a Mitchell Hall crowd of 300, and Brown was a big reason why. He scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half as UW-L (3-1) rallied from a 31-28 halftime deficit.
“Brandon is a vocal leader, but he also backs it up with the way he leads,” Koelbl said. “He does whatever it takes to give this team a lift. And tonight, he gave us a boost with his scoring.”
Brown went 5-for-8 from the floor in the second half. His tip-in off a missed basket tied the game at 49. His lay-up with 6 minutes, 28 seconds left gave UW-L a 60-50 lead.
“I like the responsibility of being a leader and telling the guys what they need to do,” Brown said. “When we play at a high level, we’re going to come out on top.”
